Why so many people are moving roles post COVID

Workplace culture is unlikely to ever return to the way things were before the pandemic, as recent research reveals.

Microsoft’s Work Trend Index surveyed 30,000 people across 31 different countries to discover 40% of respondents said they are considering leaving their employer this year. Other research by Prudential revealed that 1 in 4 of those surveyed is already preparing to find a new job once the pandemic subsides.

These results raise important issues for employers, including the reasons why so many employees are looking to change jobs. It ultimately comes down to the remote working culture Covid forced upon society causing a shift in the priorities of many employees.

A steady wage just isn’t enough for many of these workers now, and it is apparent that along with a clear path for career advancement, many employees value company culture and a good work/life balance just as highly as the financial benefits, if not even more so.

In Search of a Better Work/Life Balance

The pandemic has caused many of us to examine our work/life balance in finer detail. A lot of people’s priorities have shifted from making as much money as possible to ensuring their mental health is in good condition. This means achieving a better work/life balance along with a desire to enjoy their working time.

This is not conjecture either, as another survey by Joblist revealed that over 30% of workers would gladly sacrifice some of their pay for a better work/life balance. And as it is rarely possible to negotiate such an exchange in their current role, workers are thus seeking out companies that can provide that superior work/life balance from the get-go.

This is where a company culture of flexibility starts to play such an important part in what many workers are now prioritising for their careers. Employers must also now adjust their outlooks and expectations, providing more flexibility along with opportunities to advance careers in the post-pandemic world.

Remote Working is Here to Stay

Remote working has its disadvantages, but for many workers the pros far outweigh the cons. With many businesses adverse to allowing workers to continue remote working, a lot of people will be seeking out new employers who are willing to allow some degree of remote working. The Prudential survey also confirmed the desire of a vast majority of workers to continue some degree of remote working. Their research conducted in the United States revealed 87% of workers would prefer to continue working from home at least one day a week.

A hybrid working model definitely seems to be the future, with millions of employees having experienced these flexible work arrangements since the pandemic started. That’s not an easy cat to put back in the bag.

Very much agree on hybrid here to stay. Personally I’m a huge fan of the office environment, but appreciate others prefer being at home / cafe / park, wherever they are most productive
