Streets are complex pieces of our urban fabric that can help to combat loneliness, obesity, climate change, urban overheating, and provide for biodiversity and manage surface water. ?They should be working incredibly hard for us, so how come most of the time, decisions about streets are primarily about accommodating motorised traffic?
A different approach, which goes against the established orthodoxy uses a jigsaw of multiple pieces from the strategic transport planning, to the detailed design to allow for a more rounded consideration of sustainable placemaking, developing street details to create sticky streets – ones you want to stick around in.?
The Joy of Streets – why is it so hard to make healthy streets happen?
Streets are really important. Once streets are laid out, their pattern lasts a very long time - just look at historic cities through time and you see that their medieval street pattern persists. ?So decisions we make about streets are for the long term. ?Streets can help us tackle climate change. ?Transport is now the largest emitting sector in the UK. Emissions from it have declined only 3% since 1990 and short journeys are on the increase. ?So streets which enable walking, cycling and public transport are crucial.

I listened to the beginning of the All Parliamentary Enquiry on Children and Young People in the Built Environment. ?Really compelling 5 mins of evidence from a GP, Called Dr William Bird and the impact particularly of green space on children on their entire life. ?Really worth a listen and just illlustrates that the green spaces we create will have life long impacts for children that live there. ?
