Why is it so difficult to realize the lasting impact teachers have on their student's lives?

As I look behind me today at my 8-foot-tall bookshelves and all the incredible knowledge that resides in them I can’t help but think about my senior English teacher.

She was a brilliant woman and every time I spoke with her, I was amazed at all she knew. She was one of those people that seemed to know everything and could interact with anyone no matter who they were. This was always appealing to me and maybe it’s because of the people person that I am but one day I asked her, “How do you know so much? You can strike up a conversation with anyone and can talk about anything”.

Her response…

“I like to know a little bit about a lot of things”

I was so fascinated by this answer as I had never met anyone like her. I will never forget that day and the curiosity that was sparked by that comment. I have carried those words with me ever since and applied it in my life and career.

In my home state of Oklahoma there was and still is a significant focus on testing. The impact she made on my life would never have been able to be measured on a test and this is something we need to take into consideration when evaluating our struggling education system in America.

Today, I often find myself learning a little bit about a lot of things so I can speak and connect with anyone no matter who they are or where they reside in this world.

Curiosity coupled with her comments have helped shape me, encouraged me, and empowered me to move forward and make an impact. I am now teaching my daughter to know “a little bit about a lot of things”. ?

Her impact and my curiosity have driven me to do what I do today as a Social Selling coach. I am provided the opportunity to get curious with every individual, team, and organization I work with. I get to ask questions. connect, and continue to learn "a little bit about a lot of things"!

If you had a teacher that made an impact on your life reach out and tell them! That’s what I’m going to do.

It feels so good even years later and is a sober reminder that we are making an impact in the lives of everyone we meet even though we are oftentimes unaware of it. I heard from one of my students from 2015 or 2016 this week explaining how my influence helped him through the last few years as an adult. He shared the struggles and then he shared how he got back up and pulled himself out.

My daughter went back to her high school earlier this year to thank all of her favorite teachers and say the good-byes she couldn’t in person due to COVID (class of 2020). They were such an important influence in her life. She wouldn’t be where she is today without each of them!

We have a chain of pubs (currently about 800) in the UK called "JD Wetherspoons", the business was set up by Tim Martin. He called his company JD Wetherspoons after the teacher that said to Tim "you will never amount to anything".
