Why is this so confusing?
Remember when fat was the enemy?
Fat made you fat right? So you stopped eating fat and really got fat? What??
The new villain is carbs.
Carbs spike your glucose; then your insulin rises; and you store fat as a result, right?
So are carbs your enemy? All the gooroos seem to be saying this.
Here's the deal.
You can eat any darn thing you want and still lose weight if the majority of your days end in caloric deficit. That's a fact.
So that "move more, eat less" advice will work (for awhile) but I don't recommend it because the chance for long term success is very low (almost zero in fact).
This is where "the carb thing" comes in.
No one wants to lose 20 pounds fast and then gain it back. That's never your plan.
You want to lose fat as quickly as you can and then keep it off.
You want the full lifestyle transformation where you not only reduce your body fat but you feel great, have lots of sustained energy and just are a lot more confident in your ability to live a healthy life going forward.
To do this you must:
- create the calorie deficit
- do so without being hangry and miserable
- eat food you enjoy
Otherwise, it ain't happening. You can't force yourself to be miserable indefinitely.
The Problem
The "carb problem" is really a manifestation of your modern, first world life.
#1, your ratio of carbs to other macro-nutrients is artificially high (when compared to evolutionary standards). You can easily be consuming 65% to 70% of your total calories from carbs.
#2, many of these carbs are highly refined, engineered franken-foods that bear no resemblance to real carbs from nature. They're void of nutrition, highly inflammatory and wreaking havoc on your system (i.e., you really shouldn't be eating them at all).
#3, two, three or four decades of this (day in and day out) and you're all messed up. That carb ingestion to glucose spike to insulin response has been going on for a long time (over and over and over) and now you're insulin resistant.
Key Point: Insulin Resistant You is not the same person as Insulin Sensitive You.
The Solution
So here's your best plan to lose weight and also solve your insulin resistance:
- Eat good fat and protein at every meal along with lots of real veggies. This allows you to satiate your hunger but still create the calorie deficit required for fat loss.
- You're cutting carbs at this phase because #1 your carbs are shitty carbs and #2 you need your body to heal it's insulin resistance.
- You do this long enough to
- cure many of the inflammatory issues you have
- your body begins burning stored fat for it's excess energy needs
- and you feel great, have loads of energy and you're confident you can continue with this lifestyle forever.
The New You
You are now Insulin Sensitive You and can eat all the carbs you want.
This is my plan for transforming Insulin Resistant You into Insulin Sensitive You.
Let's be honest, carbs taste great and you want to eat them.
- Mashed potatoes and gravy
- Sweet potatoes and butter
- Warm, chewy bread and lasagna, yeah man.
First Things First
You just have to heal your system first and then the carbs are back on your plate.

6 年Once you start to add in more carbs, just dont go over board. 200-300+ grams of carbs will likely bring you back into insulin resistance.

6 年good read, but the carbs back on the menu I have a few issues with. Most obese people can't go back as the immaflation and other issues will comeback.
