Why Should You Be Investing In Skill-Enhancement?

The country today ranks as one of the youngest nations in the world, extending the threshold of youth power with a whooping more than 62 per cent of the population in the working age group of 15-59 years, and more than 54 per cent of the total population below 25 years of age. The working population is not just strong, energetic and increasingly qualified but large in number. While the statistics stand as markers of joy for the country, in the other end of the spectrum there rises a need for more jobs, more opportunities and yet many efforts to add value and skills to the country's youth, for them to adhere quality in their professional persona. Skill- enhancement, therefore, becomes a very important area to focus on for the youth of today to compete in the best form in the contemporary job hunt and corporate competitions.

A strong skill-set that you carry to your workplace each day can greatly benefit the quality of work you perform daily, besides helping you land to lucrative and best-suited job prospects. With trained skills, all the tough rows to hoe in your job responsibilities are greatly turned easy as you procure the necessary knowledge and as well a trained mind-set that fuels your daily endeavors with optimism and confidence.

Training in skill-sets also provides you the benefit of being able to work independently, without needed supervision or help to depend upon. And then as one goes on to procure soft skills, they move on from being ‘just great’ at their own work to be ‘masters’ in their extended job environment too. To successfully thrive in a workplace one needs to demonstrate some apt qualities like good communication, networking abilities, navigating skills, leadership flair, self-assessment abilities  or the knowledge of well-being. People who are trained for these flairs can help create great work environments for themselves, make enduring professional relationships, constantly grow at work and yet rise as acclaimed leaders, as their peers and colleagues stay impressed with their relative superiority in work or yet their values. Taking the time to upskill also means that you are making an effort to support yourself professionally in the long-run and as well as contributing to the economy at large.

Besides individual gains, the contemporary culture demands workplaces to invest in skill-enhancement for their workforces too. By implementing ‘skills development training’ in businesses, employers not just create a very capable workforce, giving them the tools they need to excel while you provide them with an opportunity to learn and grow - allowing them to challenge themselves. Businesses greatly reduce costs whilst they make quality investment like that on the skill-building of their employees- there should no longer be a need for them to hire and recruit talent as often, as their existent workforce becomes more capable. As the quality of talent-pool of companies increases, they move to higher yields, better profits and get an extended feeling of loyalty from their employees.

The National Skills Network writes in an article- “Investing in the skilling of adult learners has an immediate and measurable effect on employability and can transform lives. Companies with a focus on manufacturing excellence find it a strong, future forward contribution to their sector, enabling the creation of a cadre of highly skilled workers. By supporting the latest technologies for the training and skilling of workers, they show the way to the future.”  This clearly justifies how the future of the country and the youth is heavily intertwined with its present in education and training to upskill and their investments in the right areas of skill building and development. Thus, to make the most out of yourself, an investment in upskilling is not just an option, but a necessity today!

I totally agree with you, Amit Kapoor. India is a developing country, thriving on its youth for a bright future and looking at a skill-based economy/workforce for progress. Having said that, I believe the distinguishing and deciding factor for employers would be the skills of a person. Traditional roles will go and new roles, that require the application of skills will come. The future workforce should be well aware of the change that is in the pipeline and act on it from now only.
