Why should you consider an opportunity in Regulatory Consulting for fast-tracked career development?

Why should you consider an opportunity in Regulatory Consulting for fast-tracked career development?

Firstly, an introduction. I am the Internal Recruiter at fscom, an award winning governance, risk and compliance consultancy that services the payments, digital assets, capital markets and asset management industries across the UK and Ireland.

I may be slightly biased on this subject, however, working for fscom, I have been able to see first-hand how the variety of projects, exposure to critical regulatory projects, and development of hard and soft skills gained through working in a consultancy can fast-track a professional's career progression.

So why do I think that Regulatory Consulting gives rocket fuel to financial services professionals ambitions, especially early on in their careers?

?

Varied and Exciting Work

At fscom, we offer a breadth of services across audit, advisory, assurance and authorisations, working with a wide range of brands across the payments, digital assets, capital markets and asset management industries.

The ability to contribute towards a variety of projects and clientele means that no-two weeks are the same, not just keeping the day job interesting but the enhanced exposure and access - the opportunity to ‘look under the hood’ of a wide cross section of the industry - means that you can get a fast-tracked picture of what good practise looks like within your industry.

In-Depth Understanding of Regulations

The firms we work with are often on the cutting edge of innovation and are looking to us as consultants to help navigate the complex and ever evolving regulatory landscape.

As a consultant, this requires a commitment to becoming subject matter experts and a deep understanding of the relevant legislation and regulation.?

Fortunately, working within a Consultancy, you will have access to senior leaders who have already made this journey and have been recognised for their contribution to their industries, who can help guide your journey towards being a subject matter expert in your own right.

?

Skill Development and Networking

There is little good being a subject matter expert if you cannot communicate your knowledge and clients to your colleagues or clients alike. Furthermore, the impact of your work cannot be fully realised if you are not trusted by those you are working with.?

Becoming a consultant, you will be exposed to senior stakeholders within a variety of businesses that you may not otherwise have access to. This will enable you to develop skills, such as, the ability to deliver impactful presentations, communication, analysis and relationship building that will not just allow you to become a trusted advisor to you clients, but are vital skill sets for many who are looking to progress their careers in whatever direction they choose.

The saying goes your ‘Network is your net worth’. Either by attending industry events, through access to industry associations, or naturally working with a variety of clients, you will develop and grow your own network – who knows where this may lead you in the future!

?

Impactful Contribution to Our Clients

The nature of the work that we do means that our contribution can be vital to the success of our clients.

Whether this is directly supporting firms to become authorised by UK or EU regulatory bodies, helping them keep their authorisation post approval, affording assurance to enhance their relationships with banking or similar vital service providers, ensuring that their systems and operations are working as they should be, or simply providing commercially minded advice, working within a consultancy offers the opportunity to make impactful contributions to your clients growth journeys.

An Expert Opinion

With recognition of my aforementioned bias, I sought out an expert opinion in the form of specialist Recruitment Consultant/ Headhunter, Jevon Barnes, Co-Founder and Director of Alexander Barnes, who has spent the last 6+ years servicing the Fintech and wider Financial Services industries.

“Regulatory Consulting offers early-career professionals exposure to a broad range of financial and the various regulations governing them.

This diversity sharpens their understanding of group risk appetite, equipping them with skills to progress quickly in regulatory roles across the industry.

Additionally, the role typically develops adaptability, stakeholder management, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and exposure to multiple jurisdictions - skills frequently sought after when Alexander Barnes are conducting senior financial crime, regulatory compliance, and risk management searches for my clients”.

In Summary

Regulatory consulting is a great launch pad for professionals looking to pursue a career in Governance, Risk and Compliance. The variety of project and company types, exposure to senior stakeholders and industry leaders, and the soft skills developed as a consultant, all contribute to a skillset that are highly valued by the financial services industry and consulting firms alike.

You make very good points, Stuart. If I was to give my younger self an advice on starting my career in Compliance, it would be start working at a consultancy firm. Working for the right consultancy firm, will no doubt fast track any hardworking and aspiring compliance professional’s career. FSCOM has been instrumental in bringing some of the most accumplished compliance, AND HR, professionals who I have the privilege to know and work with.
