Why Should I Connect?

Why Should I Connect?

I think regarding education, it is fair to say we find ourselves at a critical juncture.

Traditional focuses on academic achievement, standardised testing, and technology integration have played pivotal roles in shaping schools as we understand and live them today. These are typically three of the biggest areas of focus in educational discussion, but unsurprisingly perhaps, I think there’s a compelling argument to be made that the future of schooling hinges on a different priority: connection.

In the last issue I discussed how we might go about developing connection, but why should we connect?

What tangible benefits does fostering relationships within the school community - among students, parents, and teachers - actually bring to the table?

Understanding the impact of these connections reveals why they should be at the forefront of school reform efforts.

Why Students Should Connect?

For students, the power of connection is directly linked to, but goes beyond enhancing academic performance; it’s about shaping their overall development and well-being. Here’s why students should connect:

  1. Enhanced Academic Success: Students who feel connected to their school, their peers and their teachers are more likely to attend school regularly, participate actively in class, and achieve improved outcomes. These connections foster a supportive environment that motivates students to strive for their best each day.
  2. Improved Mental Health: A sense of belonging can significantly boost a student’s mental health. When students feel valued and understood, they experience lower levels of anxiety and depression, leading to a more positive experiences with learning.
  3. Social Skills Development: By engaging in collaborative projects and extracurricular activities built into the framework of their schooling experience, students develop essential social skills such as communication, teamwork, resilience and empathy. These skills are invaluable both in and out of the classroom and essential for their future.

Why Parents Should Connect?

Parents must play a critical role in their child’s education. Their engagement and connection with the school community can drive student success and foster a cohesive learning environment. Here’s why parents should connect:

  1. Supportive Learning Environment: When parents are involved and connected, they can better support their child’s educational journey. Regular communication with teachers and participation in school events allows parents to stay informed and actively contribute to their child’s success.
  2. Strengthened School Community: Parental involvement helps build a stronger, more united school community. This sense of collective responsibility enhances the overall learning environment, benefiting all students. It takes a village!
  3. Positive Role Modelling: By actively engaging with the school, parents demonstrate the importance of education and community involvement to their children, instilling values that promote lifelong learning and civic responsibility.

Why Teachers Should Connect?

Teachers are at the heart of the educational process. Their ability to connect with students, parents, and colleagues can transform the educational experience for everyone involved. Here’s why teachers should connect:

  1. Effective Teaching: Teachers who build strong connections with their students can tailor their teaching methods to meet individual needs, leading to more effective and personalised instruction. This rapport encourages students to engage and take risks in their learning.
  2. Professional Growth: Connecting with colleagues through professional learning communities and mentorship programs fosters an environment of continuous improvement. Teachers can share best practices, support each other’s growth, and stay motivated and inspired.
  3. Job Satisfaction: Feeling connected to the school community can significantly enhance a teacher’s job satisfaction. Recognition, appreciation, and a sense of belonging contribute to a positive work environment, reducing burnout and turnover.

I believe the question “why should I connect?” is central to reimagining the future of education. For students, parents, and teachers, the answer lies in the myriad of benefits that strong relationships, belonging and meaning can bring. Too often though, these questions are not asked publicly and therefore reduce the purpose behind the change efforts. If we can be more transparent with the why, perhaps we will be more sustainable with the change.

As school leaders and teachers, the onus is on us to champion this shift. By fostering connections within our school communities, we can create a more inclusive, supportive, and effective learning environment.

It is time to make connection the foundation of our educational reforms, there are too many potential benefits to continue to leave it off the table.

As we finish this issue, here is a final thought from my book:

"...across all aspects of a school environment, connection is one of the most important components of what makes a school successful, its students thrive and its community flourish. Yet, a significant portion of the literature suggests it is also one of the most mistreated, mismanaged and mishandled."
