I had a great conversation with Salvatore J. Manzi on public speaking for technical professionals.
He had a lot of great things to say about how technical professionals can get better, like how to incorporate storytelling into presentations.

I created a YouTube video on why HR should care about technical staff getting better at speaking. I think what I proposed in the video is a good idea, but you be the judge! Check it out HERE.
PUBLIC SPEAKING TIP
Translate Data into Decisions
When presenting to a steering committee, focus on what the data means, not just what it is. Committees are there to make strategic decisions, so instead of overwhelming them with raw figures, highlight key insights and their implications.
Start with the why: Why does this data matter? Then move to the so what: What conclusions can be drawn? Finally, address the now what: What action should be taken?
Use simple, clear language and avoid jargon. If visuals are involved, keep them uncluttered—highlight trends, anomalies, or comparisons that support decision-making.
Anticipate questions by considering what stakeholders need to know to move forward. If a number is surprising, be ready to explain it. If there’s uncertainty, state it plainly.
By focusing on interpretation rather than just presentation, you position yourself as not just a technical expert but a strategic contributor.
