This week, we asked our Partners, Kudelski IoT , Silicon Labs , and Rightpoint to give us their take on why consumers should be excited about #Matter.
For those new to Matter – it’s a new #smarthome standard. Matter runs over existing protocols (currently Thread and Wi-Fi) with support from major smart home platforms like #amazonalexa, #googlehome, and #applehome, among others. The overall goal is to make the use of smart home devices simpler by enabling devices from different brands to work together more seamlessly.
There is a lot of discussion around its true potential. Depending on who you talk to, you will get a different perspective on its current and future value for consumers, developers, device manufacturers, etc. But, we wanted to share perspectives from leaders in the space focused on what Matter can provide to consumers.
With that being said, let's hand it over to the experts to discuss!
Christopher Schouten , Sr. Director of Marketing at Kudelski IoT
“Consumers should be excited about Matter because it finally brings a common framework for trust, security, and privacy to smart home devices. Historically, they have been among some of the worst-secured devices created, generating news headlines when hackers talk to infants through their baby monitors or gain access to security cameras using default passwords. By requiring each Matter device to be certified and have a Device Authentication Certificate, the standard is setting the bar much higher for security and ensuring that customers get both a frictionless, interoperable experience as well as a secure and private one, and that’s real progress.”
Rob Alexander , Principal Product Manager at Silicon Labs
“Most consumers want a simple and easy way to interact with their connected devices, and Matter promises to provide an intuitive smart home experience with simplicity as a flagship feature. By enabling devices to work seamlessly across smart home ecosystems, whether that be Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, or Google Home, Matter sets a new standard for interoperability in the home. Matter is unlocking the communication barriers between ecosystems and opening up the smart home device marketplace. With Matter, consumers have more product options without having to purchase a hub for every ecosystem and can expect simplified device setup and standardized security.”

“Smart home products provide greater value in the sum of their smarts, and Matter helps bring that power to the everyday consumer, not just patient-possessing tech-savvy. Matter quickly puts consumers at ease, giving reassurance that other Matter-certified products will work together. Matter products all follow the same painless setup process and give consumers the choice of using their preferred digital platform to manage their devices. What’s more, Matter will push the industry to unlock new innovative features, capabilities, and extended interoperability to your smart home products as companies seek to differentiate themselves and offer better digital experiences.”

See you next week!
So the bottomline is Matter matters! I've resisted using many smart home products because of potential hacking or data privacy concerns so a Matter-certified device from a reputable firm helps put my mind at ease.

2 年I'm interested to see if, as Matter continues to grow in popularity if it will lead to any unexpected brand collaborations down the road. Any thoughts about partnerships we could see in the future?

2 年Loved Christopher Schouten's take on how Matter makes things more secure, and you know what? As someone who's seen a ton of those hacker videos on YouTube and TikTok, I totally get that security's nothing to joke around about.

2 年With the ability to have more than one brand's product in my home and have them work together to make my home safe, secure, and smart - I would say that Matter is definitely an intriguing standard that really does set the bar higher.

2 年As a consumer, I've often felt discouraged from investing in expensive smart home products as it very much felt like you had to pick one brand's system and stick with it. With these insights, I feel confident that seamless integration across different devices from different manufacturers is possible and that that "locked-in" feeling is a thing of the past!
