For me, one of the benefits I get from setting challenges and goals for myself is that it gives me something to work towards. It helps provide me with a sense of purpose and direction in life, as well as a feeling of accomplishment when I reach my goals. For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, the months of training leading up to the race can be just as fulfilling as crossing the finish line.
