Why September always feels like the start of a new year.

Why September always feels like the start of a new year.

Why September always feels like the start of a new year:

Every time September rolls around, I feel like I’m 11 years old again, getting ready for a new school year.

But instead of heading to WH Smiths to buy new pens, notebooks and diaries - I’m taking a step back, reflecting on the last 8 months and setting goals for the 4 that are still to come.

I’m thinking forward to what I want to achieve in 2023 - and instead of waiting until the new year to make progress, I’m making a plan to lay the groundwork for it now.

Because there is no time like the present - and there is no time like September to get started.?

I’m not alone in the feeling either:

  • Time spent searching career development online increases around 30% in September compared with August
  • Food shops report 20% spikes in sales between August and September as people move towards healthier, home-cooked meals
  • Autumn is amongst the most popular times for people enrolling in health and fitness programmes

It might not be the start of a school year anymore, but it’s the start of a new season.?

One that follows summer - a time where we prioritise joy and reset ourselves against the challenges we’ve faced throughout the year so far. Where we soak up limited amounts of British sunshine and make extra plans with friends and family.

It’s also the final month in the lead-up to Q4, and I know that the decisions we make now will have a huge impact on the way we finish the year. They have the power to turn a good year into a great one or a bad one into an even worse one. And the deciding factor is going to be us.

So September feels like the perfect time to reset and look forwards:

?To channel the good energy we’ve built up over the summer into making big leaps towards refreshed goals.

To zoom out from the day-to-day and re-orientate ourselves on the bigger picture of what we hope to achieve both personally and professionally.

To make step-by-step plans, build up new habits and say goodbye to old ones.

This year in particular, with a new Prime Minister coming into place, and the kids going back to school, I feel re-invorigated and ready for a fresh start - and I think we can all join together in knuckling down.

So let’s make this month the one where we work on our goals, and start achieving the things we really want.?

Let’s implement that “new year” mentality of wanting to stick to our good habits and stay away from the bad ones. Let’s focus more on making small, marginal gains, and less on waiting and expecting big change to happen.

It might not be a new year - but it’s time for a new start.

Yes indeed. For me September is the best month of the year - but mostly since having kids - so the past 12 years or so. Time, headspace, bright(ish) mornings, momentum, sun (still some! Vit D), ... honestly think if you want to start something new, dont attempt it in Jan - so much tougher on yourself to start something (weather, short days, Xmas credit card bill, whatever else personal to you). Sep is a great month to start on business/personal goals - small ones and the big ones. Happy New Year!
