Why Self-Driving Through Uganda Should Be Your Next Adventure

Why Self-Driving Through Uganda Should Be Your Next Adventure

I know, I know! I usually write about Uganda Airlines , but today, let's switch gears and talk about something equally exciting – the best self-drive route in Uganda! ??

Sure, some patches of the roads could be better, but that's part of the charm! Unlike the superhighways in South Africa, where you whizz past historical little towns without a second glance, Uganda's roads invite you to slow down and soak in the vibrant life around you. ??

Speaking of South Africa's historic towns that time has nearly forgotten, consider Matjiesfontein, founded in 1884. Its Lord Milner Hotel is a treasure, complete with a grand staircase and even a resident ghost! But let’s get back to Uganda.

Why fly to Uganda only to hop on charter flights to Bwindi, Kasese, Fort Portal, Hoima, Kidepo, and other tourist hotspots? You'd miss out on the real essence of Uganda – the culture, the food, and the buzzing life along the routes. What's the rush? Take it all in, one mile at a time.

Here are some fun facts about Uganda's culture to enrich your journey:

  1. Delicious Delicacies: Have you ever tried pan-fried grasshoppers, known as Nsenene? They're a local delicacy and a must-try if you're offered some.
  2. Language Diversity: Uganda is home to over 30 Indigenous languages, with English and Swahili being the official languages.
  3. Tiny Churches: Uganda boasts one of the smallest churches in the world. Standing just 8 feet tall and 250 centimetres wide, the chapel on Biku Hill has just?enough room inside for three churchgoers—including the Pastor!
  4. Cultural Melting Pot: With over 50 different ethnic groups, Uganda's cultural diversity is reflected in its music, dance, and art.
  5. Rolexes for Breakfast: No, not the watches! In Uganda, a "Rolex" is a popular street food made from chapati, and eggs rolled together—a delicious and quick meal on the go.

One traveller has put together an incredible self-drive route that captures the heart and soul of Uganda. Check it out here: Best Self-Drive Route in Uganda.

So, pack your bags, board a Uganda Airlines flight, and rent a car once you get to Entebbe. Fuel up and get ready for an unforgettable journey through the Pearl of Africa. Trust me, every bump and turn is worth it. Happy driving! ???

You’ve left out the gorgeous Ankole cows on farms, very affordable coffee along the way, sorghum ‘porridge’, the Ankole museum. Lake Bunyonyi and tue night lord that is Kampala. I’m Kenyan and the Ugandan road trips.
