Why Self-Care Needs to be a Daily Priority

During this transition into the “new normal”, it’s important that we are still creating time every day to take care of ourselves and our overall well-being.

It’s easy to think that you don’t have the time or to feel selfish and guilty when you do find the time to take care of yourself. Those feelings are completely normal as we are so used to putting others needs before our own.

I am here to remind you that “self-care is not selfish...you must fill your own cup before you can pour into others."

To properly take care of others and to be present for our responsibilities, we must ensure that our physical and emotional needs are met. If not, we increase the chance of feeling burnout, stressed, and depressed.

Self-care looks different for everyone, as it can be anything that you find enjoyment in doing or anything that makes you feel happy and relaxed. Some examples are meditating, napping, talking to a friend, exercising, or even catching up on your favorite TV show. These activities don’t have to be time consuming or extravagant – all you need is 5 minutes of your day to do something for you.

If you are unsure on what to do, take two minutes and think “what will benefit me most in this moment?”

Lastly, keep in mind and recognize all the things that you already do to care for yourself instead of thinking “you’re not doing enough” or “should be doing more.”

Taking care of your mind, body and soul can help you live a more balanced life and positively enhance your role at work, at home, and in the community
