In our fast-paced world, it’s all too common for us to treat self-care like a frivolous indulgence. We work relentlessly to meet deadlines, support families, and fulfill social obligations. We believe, on some level, that resting or relaxing is a sign of laziness—or even guilt-inducing. This is especially prevalent among women, who historically have been expected to shoulder multiple roles without complaint. But here’s a fact that can’t be ignored: without our health and well-being, we cannot truly be there for anyone—not even ourselves.
The Reality Check: We Are Overworked and Under-Rested
When we push ourselves beyond healthy limits, we risk more than just temporary fatigue; we jeopardize our physical, emotional, and psychological health. We’re effectively drawing on a bank account we haven’t adequately funded—sooner or later, it’s going to run out.
Why Women Are Especially at Risk
Despite significant strides toward gender equality, societal expectations still place immense pressure on women to “do it all.” Not surprisingly, women are more likely to experience burnout due to juggling full-time careers and unpaid domestic labor. The United Nations even notes that women perform, on average, more than double the amount of unpaid care work compared to men.
Paradoxically, the push for “having it all” can leave many women feeling depleted, unfulfilled, and guilty about taking even a fraction of the time they need to recharge. It’s no wonder so many find themselves battling chronic fatigue, brain fog, and mounting health issues—both physical and mental.
The Cost of Ignoring Self-Care
Let’s be clear: neglecting self-care doesn’t just affect you. It ripples out to everything and everyone in your life—family, friends, career, and community. When chronic stress takes hold, decision-making suffers, productivity dips, and personal relationships can become strained. Stress also directly impacts the immune system, making you more susceptible to illnesses. Ultimately, you can’t serve from an empty cup.
And while we often take pride in our ability to persevere, that grit can become detrimental if it means ignoring our well-being. Without purposeful downtime and restorative practices, we can run ourselves into the ground, compromising the very goals we set out to achieve.
