Why Self-Awareness Is the Key to Building Your Communication Skills and Confidence (Again) and Why I Designed a Course to Help with This

After years of working with migrants and international students, I’ve learned one thing for sure: confidence is the biggest barrier holding you back.

I can help you with your resume, but if you don’t feel confident enough to apply for the job, then it’s useless.

If you manage to get an interview but lack the confidence to talk about yourself and your skills, then it’s pointless.

Confidence is the number one challenge. Many migrants arrive in Australia full of hope, but the reality is that the move can be hurtful. I know this first hand. Language barriers, discrimination, and migration issues chip away at that hope, leading to imposter syndrome.

You’ve been stuck in survival jobs, losing touch with the professional identity you worked so hard for. It’s no wonder you start to doubt your skills and experience.

And then there’s communication. Because you don’t feel confident in yourself here in Australia, you shy away from speaking about your skills and achievements. You might not even realize you have these skills anymore. When you finally do land a job, it comes with another set of challenges—fitting into the Australian workplace, building relationships with your team, and getting the recognition you deserve.

I’ve seen so many migrants stagnate in jobs because they’ve found a comfort zone. But they aren’t happy. They want more. They deserve more. That promotion, the pay rise, the opportunity to upskill or take on a new project, and the recognition from your boss.

But here’s the thing—you have to be your own biggest cheerleader. If you don’t speak up about your skills and achievements, no one else will.

This is why I created Work Talk. It’s been in the back of my mind for years. Since I started Jobspeak Academy, I knew that a course like this was needed, but I wasn’t ready for such a big project at the time. Over the years, I’ve had countless conversations with clients who have told me they’ve lost their confidence. I’ve worked with organizations that share the same feedback—the biggest barriers their clients face are confidence and communication skills.

The truth is, if you don’t feel confident, you won’t sound confident when you speak.

Confidence comes from truly knowing who you are, why you’re great, and what you’ve accomplished.

You need to build that self-awareness and then strengthen your communication skills to share it.

Work Talk isn’t just about learning English—it’s about helping you feel different about yourself so that you can move forward in your career.

This course means a lot to me personally because I’ve seen so many clients cry, feel defeated, and believe they’re not good enough. I wish you could see what I see in you—how skilled, resilient, and talented you are. Migrants aren’t always given a fair go in Australia. You’re expected to work wherever you can, just to help the economy. But the truth is, you’ve had it tough since moving here. With the right support and a course like this, where you’ll feel both challenged and uplifted, you can build back your confidence, grow your self-awareness, and make a real impact in your career—and in this country.

If yo are interested in joining Work Talk then you can click here. We start on Wednesday and I promise it will be 8 empowering weeks of confidence and communication.
