Why Santiago, Chile?

"Why Santiago, Chile?" is a question I’m frequently asked. After traveling to 48 countries across six continents—Antarctica is still on my bucket list! People often wonder why I decided to settle in Santiago. Allow me to share the story behind my choice.

First, a bit of background. I spent the last14 years living in California, just across the Goldengate Bridge from the vibrant city of San Francisco. While the Bay Area is filled with beauty and opportunity, I wanted to explore new horizons. Could I find a place just as captivating, with a rich culture, but offering a fresh perspective on life?

So, my search began. I was on the lookout for a place that was cool, had great people, a rich cultural scene, a manageable time zone, and, of course, a sense of adventure. I considered some of my favorite spots—Oslo, Germany, the South of France, Paris, and even flirted with the idea of Florida. But then, Santiago, Chile, caught my eye.

And why Santiago, you ask? Well, let me tell you:

  1. Cool Factor: Santiago is cool—both literally and figuratively. The city has a vibrant, modern vibe with a backdrop of the Andes that adds a sense of majesty to everyday life.
  2. The Andes: These towering mountains aren’t just a scenic backdrop; they’re a reminder of nature’s grandeur and offer endless opportunities for outdoor adventures.
  3. Safety: Santiago’s safety was a major draw for me. Compared to San Francisco, where crime rates can be unsettling, Santiago offers a sense of security that is hard to find in many major cities. The crime rate here is significantly lower, making it a more peaceful place to live.
  4. Green and Clean: The city’s commitment to cleanliness and green spaces is impressive. Santiago takes pride in its parks and public spaces, providing a refreshing environment for its residents.
  5. The People: Chileans are some of the nicest, most respectful people I’ve ever met. Their warmth and hospitality make everyday interactions a pleasure.
  6. Food and Hospitality: Chile offers a culinary scene that is as diverse as its geography, with food that is not only delicious but also served with genuine warmth and hospitality.
  7. Business and Economy: Santiago is a thriving hub for international business. Major corporations in finance, mining, tech, and various other industries have set up shop here, making it a bustling economic center in South America. The mining sector, in particular, is a major driver of the Chilean economy, with some of the world's largest mining companies operating out of Santiago. The tech scene is also on the rise, with startups and global tech giants recognizing the potential in this dynamic city.
  8. Global Connectivity: One of the great advantages of living in Santiago is the time zone. Chile is mostly in line with EST, making it easy to do business with North America and Europe during normal working hours. This makes Santiago a perfect base for global business operations, allowing seamless communication and collaboration with teams and clients across the world.
  9. Cosmopolitan Vibe: Santiago is an international, cosmopolitan city that blends traditional Chilean culture with global influences. Neighborhoods like Vitacura and Nueva Costanera are prime examples of this, offering a mix of high-end dining, chic boutiques, and a lifestyle that appeals to the global citizen. These areas are known for their modern architecture, lush green spaces, and a vibrant atmosphere that attracts both locals and expats alike.

Now, let’s talk numbers. Santiago is a bustling metropolis with a population of over 6 million people. The average annual income here is around $13,000 USD, significantly lower than San Francisco, but so is the cost of living. Housing is much more affordable, and day-to-day expenses are more manageable, allowing for a far better quality of life.

Chile’s unique geography makes it the longest country in the world, stretching over 4,300 kilometers from north to south. This means you can experience deserts, mountains, beaches, and forests—all within one country. Santiago is strategically located, offering easy access to some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world.

Chile’s history is equally fascinating. Did you know that Chile played a key role in the rescue mission of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s legendary Antarctic expedition? And for literature enthusiasts, Willy Mitchell’s novel, Cold Courage, captures the spirit of this country in a gripping tale.

After a year of living here, I’ve come to realize that English speakers are a rarity in Santiago, making up less than 5% of the population. It’s been a fun challenge and a great motivation to finally get serious about learning Spanish (Babbel, here I come!).

So, why Santiago? Because it’s cool in every sense of the word. It’s a city that blends safety, culture, and natural beauty seamlessly. The time zone is mostly EST-friendly, the food is fantastic, and the people are even better. Plus, I’m loving the adventure of discovering a new continent. Buenos Aires, and Mendoza are already checked off my list, and I’m looking forward to exploring Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Easter Island, and Punta Arenas next.

In short, Chile is an amazing place, and Santiago is the perfect base to explore it from. If you’re looking for a new adventure (or a new place to live) , then maybe it’s time to consider Chile too!
