Why Safeguarding Can't Wait: #5 Reasons for CEOs to Take Action

Attention CEOs: Prioritize Safeguarding Now

Dear Champion,

As we approach the upcoming performance review cycle, I wish to address a critical question integral to our collective progress: have you prioritized HR risk and safeguarding as vital in your organizations? Ignoring this critical element can have dire and deep-seated consequences, not just for those we serve, but also for our organization's reputation – Don’t risk it all; this is a priority!!

Yes, and why so? You may (and probably) ask. It isn't just a responsibility; it's a moral imperative! It's the process of protecting individuals (our employees, beneficiaries, and….. more broadly, our stakeholders), particularly those who are vulnerable, from harm, abuse, and exploitation. Safeguarding encompasses a wide range of measures, including structures, policies, procedures, training, and monitoring, to maintain a safe and supportive environment for everyone

And so ..... as leaders, we have the opportunity to take a stand and prioritize safeguarding, not just as a legal obligation but as a vital component of our organizational culture. In so doing, we can create a safe and supportive workplace for all employees and demonstrate our commitment to our stakeholders.

Sounds good? Let's do this!

Here are the key reasons why safeguarding must top our priority list:

  1. Attracting and retaining talent: Candidates look for employers who prioritize their well-being and safety. Demonstrating our commitment to safeguarding can attract and retain top talent in an increasingly competitive job market.
  2. Protecting our employees: Ensuring that everyone in our organization understands what safeguarding means, and how to report concerns is crucial to creating a safe and supportive workplace culture.
  3. Maintaining a positive reputation: Prioritizing safeguarding demonstrates that our organization takes its responsibilities seriously, and can help us maintain a positive reputation.
  4. Meeting legal obligations: Laws and regulations surrounding safeguarding are constantly evolving, and it's important to stay up-to-date to avoid legal liability. YES and even where there is no legal framework, i,e. artificial intelligence (AI), endeavor to do the RIGHT THING!!
  5. Fulfilling our mission: For organizations working in the development and humanitarian sector, safeguarding poses an even deeper challenge, and is crucial to fulfilling their mission of creating positive change in the world. You can ill afford to ignore it, as it has potentially catastrophic consequences.?By prioritizing safeguarding, AND LAYERING, it in everything we do, organizations, can ensure they are truly making a difference in the lives of those they serve.

It may seem daunting to address safeguarding risks, but it's crucial to remember that small steps can make a significant difference. A vital tool that can help in prioritizing and managing safeguarding risks is your RISK REGISTER. By assessing the likelihood and potential impact of different safeguarding risks, your organizations can determine which risks require the most urgent attention and allocate resources accordingly.

As champions, don't risk the consequences of ignoring this critical element. Let's prioritize safeguarding as a vital human resources risk element that cannot be overlooked – ever!

Prioritize safeguarding now and make it a vital part of your organizational culture.

Sincerely,

Fellow Champion
