Why S31803 Is Often Substituted with S32205 in Quotations
Today, I received feedback from a client regarding a quotation. They asked me, "Hi Cecile, why offering S32205 i/o S31803?" This question got me thinking about the nuances and considerations behind material selection in our industry, particularly the frequent substitution of S31803 with 2205 in quotations.
In the realm of duplex stainless steel, S31803 and 2205 frequently come up as key players in industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, and marine engineering. While these two materials share many similarities in terms of performance, they differ in chemical composition and mechanical properties that can influence their applications.
S31803 (also known as F51) and 2205 are both high-chromium, high-molybdenum stainless steels, yet 2205 has a slightly higher nickel content, which enhances its corrosion resistance. Despite these similarities, S31803 is less commonly used in the Chinese market compared to 2205. As a result, many steel mills prioritize the production of 2205 over S31803.
One significant aspect to consider is the MOQs required for S31803. Depending on the steel mill, these MOQs range from 25 tons to as much as 200 tons. This can pose a challenge for customers whose order volumes fall below these thresholds. In such cases, it becomes common practice to suggest substituting S31803 with 2205 when order quantities are insufficient for the minimum requirements.
