Are you tired of the same old 9-to-5 grind, shuffling through rush-hour traffic and clocking in at a desk that feels more like a prison cell?
If you've been dreaming about a life where you're your own boss, working from a hammock on a beach or a cosy cabin in the mountains, then listen up!
As an ex-corporate accountant who's been there and done that, I'm here to spill the beans on why running a remote accounting practice is a whole new ballgame compared to the traditional cubicle shuffle.
1. Freedom to Roam
Let's start with the most obvious perk: location independence. Remember those days when you were chained to your desk, dreaming about escaping to a more inspiring environment? Well, in the remote accounting world, your office can be wherever your heart desires.
Whether it's a trendy café, your favourite park bench, or even your own backyard, you call the shots. Just imagine crunching those numbers while sipping a Café con Leche by the sea – now that's living the dream!
Example: Being a former corporate accountant, I now operate my online practice from a vintage caravan, travelling around Europe. I’ve covered a whole lot of ground while balancing the books for my clients. From the sandy beaches of Costa Blanca to the Polish green fields and forests, my nomadic office has no boundaries.
2. Flexible Work Hours
Remember that dreadful feeling when your alarm went off at the crack of dawn, and you wished for just a few more minutes of sleep? Say goodbye to that because remote accounting lets you set your own schedule.
Night owl or an early bird, you can structure your work hours to match your peak productivity times. Whether you're a 2 AM spreadsheet superstar or a 10 AM coffee-fuelled champion, the choice is yours.
Example: I’m definitely not an early bird and the thought of an alarm clock going off gives me shivers. Since I started my digital practice, I haven’t used my alarm clock even once. I wake up naturally around 8-9 am, then have a long breakfast and coffee with my husband and I’m ready for work around 11 am ??
3. Diverse Client Base
Running a remote accounting practice opens the door to clients from all corners of the globe. No more being limited to the local businesses in your neighbourhood. You can serve clients from different industries, cultures, and time zones.
This not only broadens your horizons but also exposes you to unique financial challenges and solutions that you might never encounter in a traditional office setting.

Example: I specialize in eCommerce accounting. Since this field is still relatively new and rapidly evolving, my remote practice allowed me to work with clients from all over the world who needed expert guidance in navigating the complexities of eCommerce accounting.
4. Tech-Savvy Expert
Remote accounting isn't just about spreadsheets and calculators. Embracing technology is crucial for success. You'll be leveraging cutting-edge accounting software, cloud-based platforms, and communication tools to collaborate seamlessly with clients and team members.
Becoming a tech-savvy pro is essential, and the good news is that the learning curve can be pretty exciting!
Example: Since the beginning I decided to go all-in on automation. I integrated AI-powered cloud software for my eCommerce clients, saving them time and hassle. This not only made my practice more efficient but also impressed my clients with the modern approach I brought to the table.
5. Building a Brand and Community
In the world of remote accounting, you're not just an accountant – you're a brand. Your online presence, from your website to your social media accounts, plays a crucial role in attracting clients.
Sharing your journey, tips, and expertise not only establishes you as an authority but also helps you build a community of like-minded accountants and bookkeepers who are also eager to reclaim their freedom.
Example: I started a YouTube channel where I share weekly insights into remote accounting, sprinkled with some behind-the-scenes. Over time, I started hosting virtual workshops and live training, turning some of my viewers into loyal clients.
