?? Sunny with a chance of hurricanes

Buckle up, weather obsessives! Microsoft's new AI model, Aurora, promises to outshine current weather prediction models. Trained on mountains of data, Aurora can predict not just your weekend picnic's fate, but also air pollution and climate change impacts – all while being way less computationally expensive than older systems. Interestingly, it turns out the Microsoft is not the only company in the weather prediction game. Google has its own application, called SEEDS, that also uses AI to to improve the accuracy of weather predictions.

?? Well, that's awkward

Calorie-trackers are among the most widely-used apps on mobile phones. But no matter how easy they are to use, they require a level of discipline and a time commitment. But what if that tracking could be automated. Researchers at University of Waterloo are whipping up AI that ditches calorie-counting apps and goes straight for your every bite. This Skynet of snacking uses video analysis to track your munchies, working with any utensil. While the technology is new, it is evolving quickly, learning to estimate food volume and even learn to recognize different dishes. Let's hope that it doesn't learn to guilt trip users after they have a few extra spoonfuls of ice cream.

?? WhatsAI

If you ever wondered how Meta (previously known as Facebook) was going to monetize WhatsApp, wonder no more. Apparently, they think that if you play an AI angle, users won't be annoyed that you're advertising to them in their conversations. <sigh> The messaging app which has historically touted a privacy-first approach is going to be using AI to serve ads based on a user's Facebook and Instagram habits (creepy, right?). This marks a big change for WhatsApp, which has previously avoided the advertising tactics that fund its siblings Facebook and Instagram.
