Why the rise of Socialism is absurd?

After the cold war, United States of American became the only super power in charge of world order. On the other hand the European Union expanded its dominance and Russia proved that cold war is only over in history books. Meanwhile China rose to a commercial giant and Iran became a military power with its long ranged missiles.
First, we have to understand that after the fall of the Berlin wall and Soviet Union dissolution, the idea of communism and socialism reached a minimum level in people’s minds. Soviet natives and East Germans were telling their unheard stories about being oppressed during the long times of black out of information in the communist regimes. Many people were observing the negative effects of having a totalitarian government telling you what to do/wear/think/decide/etc.
Then, the rise of Islamic radicalism started by finding a safe haven in Afghanistan. Al Qaeda and Taliban became the new arch enemies. This happens with ISIS in latter years also.
By the way what does my rambling has to do with the idea of Socialism?
To the eyes of most of the millennials, the idea of fighting good against evil is preposterous. Their priorities are reducing the environmental causes, individual rights (i.e. LGBTQ and decriminalization of pot and open borders), increasing the minimum wages, free health care and free education system.
Obviously, the word “free” is one of the most attractive words in marketing and advertisement. We see every day in marketplaces that if you buy this product or service you can have free items and so on. Therefore we do know that “free” is a very tempting offer. That’s their business model. A few numbers of people may turn down free offers, and that’s one of the reasons of attractiveness of socialism in modern day America.
In business terms when the firm offers you something free they either expect you to pay the price within the initial offer you paid or in a very near future. Ok then free is good and we definitely want it but the main problem here is what will it cost you? Higher taxation? More limited job opportunities? Less competitiveness in businesses and our careers?
If you are going to have free education and free health care system it is going to cost you higher taxes. If openly understood the true meaning of socialism, I hardly believe many people are going to leave it to the government to take the decision for you.
