Why Rich Kids Become Rich Adults and Poor Kids Become Poor Adults.

Why Rich Kids Become Rich Adults and Poor Kids Become Poor Adults.

When you read Dudley's recent speech on the costs and returns of higher education and higher education financing you will find there are three main reasons "Why Rich Kids Become Rich Adults and Poor Kids Become Poor Adults."

  1. Lack of accurate information
  2. Lack of preparedness
  3. Lack of funds

On a global scale, the compounding effect is mindboggling. Looking from an employment perspective alone, currently, 202 million (million) people are unemployed, 40% of them are youth. Is this the way forward? Further, "income inequality has increased in recent decades, while economic mobility has stagnated. Meanwhile, absolute mobility appears to have fallen, indicated by the declining share of children who earn more than their parents. The combination of high inequality and low mobility is because it means that being born into a low-income family is more consequential today than in the past. Since education is a key determinant of upward mobility, one way to increase economic mobility in the United States would be to increase overall post-secondary educational attainment."

Are income inequality, stagnant economic mobility, and unemployment the way forward? Is this our future? Clearly, our world and especially the youth are in pain.

Next time you see a youth, just pause for a second, and ask yourself "how can I understand this youth's pain better"? Will his/her barrier to upward mobility be a lack of accurate information, lack of preparedness or a lack of funds? What is the point of more pain?

Going forward, I am going to give a pause, compassion, and kindness a try. How about you?
