Why RIBA Council

Why RIBA Council

Our industry is undergoing seismic changes. Who we are as a profession, the value we bring, and why and how we build are questions we need to ask ourselves constantly.

There are four areas where RIBA’s leadership is essential for evaluating the profession, presenting its value to society, and ensuring its healthy progress:

  1. We need to decolonise access to knowledge, making it affordable and accessible for members at all points in their careers.
  2. We must increase support among members around the world. There must be a greater peer-to-peer / practice-to-practice exchange of knowledge, experience, and talent, locally and internationally.
  3. We must encourage a greater engagement with students, and those who have recently qualified. The wealth of knowledge and experience that can be reciprocally offered by academia and industry is vital.
  4. We must work for better inclusion in the profession. We need to ask difficult questions about why the diversity of society is not reflected in our industry.

Being part of the RIBA Awards and Sustainable Futures Groups has allowed me to collaborate first-hand with many members from different-sized practices and stages in their careers. It has been a privilege to experience the care given by volunteer members as they draw on their unique insights to collectively inform critical decisions. It’s this inclusive and diverse approach that needs amplifying to enable the RIBA to celebrate and reflect the multi-faceted range of members that make up our profession today.

My career has crossed the boundary from a global practice to small ateliers. Alongside my professional practice, I teach at universities, advocating for the agency of architects to impact society and the environment positively.

As a Council member, I am looking forward to collaborating with a broader team of members to bring greater value to the RIBA and its members.

To all architects in our collective networks, please vote for Mina. I had no hesitation in nominating Mina for RIBA council. We need more passionate, committed and highly knowledgeable sustainable experts into RIBA council. After a lull in sustainability over the last year within the RIBA there is not a moment to lose. I have had the absolute pleasure of working with Mina over the last 4 years at the RIBA and have greatly admired her skill in bringing all parts of the architectural profession and wider construction industry together to deliver real change. Best of luck Mina.
