Why Business Resolutions Are A Waste of Time
Forget About Your Resolutions
I only used resolution in the title because that’s what we all say on New Year Day – I’m going to be a better dad, a better boss, lose weight, eat better, relax, and so on.
You may as well eat that Godiva chocolate or munch through that bag of chips now because most New Year resolutions fail by now. And just sit back down on the couch if your resolution is to run a half-marathon this year.
Resolutions are almost always focused on a negative – stop doing [insert bad habit here] that you know you should stop – or loose visions of “being a better you.”
Resolve and resolutions fade.
I'm not trying to bring you down, but to help you get a paradigm shift. Take goals, goals are actionable. Shift your thinking to your 2016 goals.
By planning to achieve your goals, you can hold yourself accountable to meeting that objective.
So forget About Your Resolutions and start thinking about your goals.
I’ll get to your IT goal for 2016 in a moment, but first, why goals over resolutions?

You can take action on a goal. It’s not a list of 10 resolutions that you know you won’t keep. There’s a big difference between “I’m going to cut back on junk food” and “I’m going to lose 10 pounds.”
A goal of losing 10 pounds is measurable. It requires planning. And, it also requires eating less junk food and maybe even doing some exercise – both of which are good for you.
So resolve to set a goal.
If your IT is like many business’, you probably have just enough time to keep everything up and running – serving as your company’s help desk, trouble shooting the telephony system, managing storage and backup data.
It’s time for you to think about how to take back time to successfully plan how to best use information technology to run your business more effectively.
Here’s your goal for 2016:
You don’t have to do everything yourself.
Now, your goal shouldn’t say “I’m going to outsource 50% of my IT to a managed network services provider.” That’s arbitrary and likely to be unsuccessful for you in the long run.
But you should start identifying what IT functions you could outsource. Research (and keep reading our blog!), plan, and begin to consider your budget options. By the time you begin planning for 2017, you’ll have an idea for how you could outsource some or even all of your IT functions (depending on the size and complexity of your information technology needs).
Set a goal to make sure your information and network are secure. Did you realize 44% of Small Businesses are Victims of Cyber Attacks and 60% of those businesses are out of business within six months? Don't be a statistic set a goal so you can focus on growing your business and now worry about your IT.
Who knows, maybe even planning for this business goal will carry over into personal goals and you will run that half-marathon this year.
And whether you decide to work with us, on your own, or with someone else; I wish you every success in 2016!
