Why Are Resolutions So Hard to Keep?
by Kelsey Alpaio, Senior Associate Editor
If you’re like me, the resolutions you set for yourself just a few weeks ago are already far away thoughts. Those new sneakers you got to jumpstart your workout routine haven't seen much action. That journal you bought to help track your new habits is still blank. The pile of books on your shelf that you promised to read this year continues to collect dust.
Don’t worry, I’m not here to guilt you. I’m here to remind you to be patient with yourself.
In the last few weeks of December, you likely took several days or even weeks off work. The holidays probably disrupted your sleep schedule or routine entirely. So, yeah, it’s unreasonable to expect yourself to hit the ground running on January 1st with a bunch of new habits and an entirely new personality.?
If you have aspirations — things you want to do differently in your life — that’s great! But it’s okay if those goals don’t align with a random calendar we literally made up. Set your New Year’s resolutions next month. Start them on your birthday instead. Or don’t set resolutions at all!???
I’ve decided to try out a quarterly cadence for my goals this year. (It works for businesses, so why not me?) Every 12 weeks, I’ll check in with myself, update my goals, address any obstacles, and try to move forward given whatever is happening in my life at that time.??
Remember: Don’t let anyone, even me, dictate what’s right for you. But if you are looking for some guidance on how to get started, these articles can help.

Habits and routines are not interchangeable. A habit is a behavior done with little or no thought, whereas a routine?is a series of behaviors frequently, and intentionally, repeated. To turn a behavior into a habit, it first needs to become a routine. How do you start?

Most of us struggle to achieve the goals we set for ourselves. There are several reasons why: We set unattainable goals; we lack the motivation to follow through; we don’t really value the goal as much as we think we do; or there may be circumstances beyond our control — an illness, caretaking responsibilities, or a bad economy. Here's some advice from experts on how to become more mindful and realistic while setting goals.
Many of us have been raised to accept that, to be successful, we have to be perfect. But imposing such high standards on ourselves as well as those around us can be detrimental to our success and well-being. Instead, learn to extend yourself some grace and practice self-compassion.
