Why Recommendations Matter and How To Ask For Them

When you go on holiday you usually ask for a recommendation from a friend, family or the internet.

?

When you buy from Amazon, you sometimes choose the cheaper option. Sometimes the quicker option. You nearly always check reviews.

?

When we went on our first cruise holiday this year, we looked at recommendations from travel agents then looked at recommendations for the right cruise lines.

?

When you want to work with someone in business, you often ask trusted colleagues for recommendations - ?or you check out recommendations on someone’s website and LinkedIn profile.

?

If you have no recommendations or they’re 5 years old, you will have a bigger struggle to win the deal.

?

Recommendations give you extra branding, awareness and credibility

?

The best time to ask if not when you deliver what you promise, that is your job.

?

The best time to ask is when you overdeliver.


So how to you ask for a recommendation?


1.??? Have I delivered everything I promised?

?

If they say no, ask what you could have done better.

?

2.??? If they say “yes” ask “What was the experience like working with me?”


Listen and take notes on what is said

?

Then ask, “I’m sure you know recommendations are important in business. Would it be okay if I emailed what you’ve just as a LinkedIn recommendation.

?

60% will say yes.

?

20% will say yes and forget, so you need to follow up a week later.

?

20% will use an excuse like "it’s not company policy" or say "they don’t want the competitors to find out!"


?

a) Go to the person’s LinkedIn profile

?

b) Right Click under MORE

?

c) Select REQUEST A RECOMMENDATION

?

d) Then type in what the person has said about you.


e) Press send
