Why Reading LinkedIn Posts Won't Change Your Life: The Hard Truth About Personal Growth

Scrolling through LinkedIn, it's easy to be inspired by stories of success, motivational quotes, and professional advice. But here's the harsh reality: simply consuming content on LinkedIn won't change your life.

Personal growth and development require ACTION, not just passive reading. Research from the Association for Talent Development (ATD) reveals that individuals who set actionable goals are 42% more likely to achieve them than those who don't. Yet, how many of us read a thought-provoking post and then go on with our day, unchanged?

The gap between knowledge and action is where dreams go to die.

It's not just about learning; it's about doing. Consider this: a study by the Journal of Applied Psychology found that individuals who engage in deliberate practice – focused, goal-oriented training – outperform those who don’t by a significant margin.

This practice isn't easy. It demands time, effort, and a willingness to fail and learn from those failures. Training is the differentiator. It’s what separates the good from the great. Look at elite athletes or top executives – they don’t rely on passive learning. They invest in rigorous training programs, constant skill development, and they challenge themselves regularly.

A survey by PWC (Pricewaterhousecoopers) showed that companies investing heavily in employee training see a 24% higher profit margin. This isn't just about corporate growth; it's a blueprint for personal development too.

But here’s the controversial bit: most people are too lazy to do it. Yes, I said it. We live in a culture that glorifies the quick fix, the easy hack, the shortcut. But real, transformative change doesn’t come from reading a post or liking a comment. It comes from taking the uncomfortable, often grueling steps toward improvement.

So, next time you find yourself nodding along to a LinkedIn post, ask yourself: what am I going to do about it?

Because reading about success is easy, but achieving it requires relentless, often uncomfortable action. And that, my friends, is why most people remain just good, while a few become truly great.

I challenge you this week to take a look at your actions. What efforts, strategies, techniques and tactics are you implementing based on information you are reading, scrolling or browsing? Or are you just wasting time and "hoping something sticks"?

At 38 years old I left the auto shop & machine shop to get into medical. Big jump, right? The last module we were required to set up a Linked In account. I was anti social media & expressed to my professor "I ain't doing it." She retorted in her Texas twang "OK, you can get a zero, go back to turning a wrench, and have grease in your hair." 8 years later, I have connections with Green Barrets, Navy SEALS, Doctors, millionaires & CEOs. Yeah, I zip through some posts, like some car pics & post occasionally. But my life has dramatically changed; I changed it. Linked In Learning, books bought, & challenges made or at least attempted. My biggest take away is I learned to say to myself "Do something about it! Get off your haunches & go!" Thanks, Dr. Seth!
