Last evening was the first of ten sessions of the Choose to Win coach training and certification program from #ZigZiglar , Inc., of Dallas, Texas, the organization founded by motivational speaker, sales trainer and author, Zig Ziglar. He became the pre-eminent motivational speaker in America and globally, working in the field for about 40 years until his retirement in 2010. He passed away in 2012. He legacy lives on through his company, Ziglar, Inc., run by his son, Tom Ziglar.
The first session focused on the coaching methodology but took a deep-dive into the reasons why each student was interested in becoming business coaches. “What is your why?” we were asked. I pondered my ‘why’ and defined it quickly having worked on this and other issues for the past ten years. I’ll share it with you but first, although it seems obvious, what is a ‘why’ or ‘Big Why’?
A “Why” refers to having a clear and meaningful purpose that drives one’s actions and decisions. It manifests in the passion, energy and vision that gets us out of bed early and keeps us up late into the night. A “Big Why” is, well, bigger, and often self-created when we are inspired to make our lives count or to leave a legacy. It is important to have a Big Why because it helps individuals stay motivated and focused on their goals, especially during difficult times. The bigger the ‘why’ the better. For example, ‘Saving the planet’ is a Big Why. It’s big; it’s bold; it’s inspiring, so inspiring if fact, that millions of people across the globe have joined together in this noble cause.
When we have a Big Why, we are more likely to persevere through challenges and setbacks because we have a deeper understanding of what we are working towards. It also helps us prioritize our time and resources more effectively, as we can evaluate whether or not a task or opportunity aligns with our overarching purpose.

Furthermore, a Big Why can inspire others to join us in our endeavors, whether that be a personal goal or a shared mission. By communicating our purpose and passion, we can create a sense of community and enlist the support of others who share our values.
In my workbook, I wrote these words without much contemplation. It’s quite simple, yet it may change as I progress through the next nine sessions. But for now: To fulfill the promise of my God-given gifts and talents.
Have you explored your ‘Big Why’? Share it here, leave a comment and/or a like. I’d love to hear from you. Till next time.
