Why Qualified Candidates Lose Remote Jobs (it's not why you think)

Remote jobs have never been more plentiful (when there wasn't a rampant pandemic) nor more in demand than today.

But even though so many remote jobs are available, qualified candidates lose remote jobs every day ... but it's not for the reasons you think.

Clearly, if you knew why qualified candidates were losing remote jobs, you'd avoid it, right?

The top reason you're losing remote jobs, when you're qualified is ... because you portray yourself as qualified.

On the surface, this probably doesn't make much sense. But let's think about it ...

Remote jobs have a high number of competitive candidates today, as 50-65% of currently employed workers are searching for jobs and 2/3 of candidates are looking for remote jobs (but only 1/3 of employers are offering them). So it's really competitive to find a remote job.

That also means that many other qualified candidates are also applying for the same remote jobs as you. Employers are seeing far more qualified candidates for remote positions than they have interview spots.

So this means that being qualified doesn't make you special ... instead it makes you average.

And that's why you're losing remote jobs when you're qualified, because being qualified isn't enough.

You need to sell yourself as more than just qualified.

And that's really difficult for most job seekers, because you've been taught by career coaches/authors, outplacement, resume writers, friends/mentors, all the way back to your college placement office, to sell yourself as qualified.

I help people solve the most difficult job search problems, including getting past ATSs, ageism, remote positions, product/job function/career/industry/ geographic change, job search acceleration, unemployment, "bouncy" recent career path, job search turnaround, seeking raise/promotion, industry in decline/consolidation, long term gaps, family leave, or other of the most challenging job search issues.

Thank you! As an interviewer (on the other side of that job search) this is very insightful. It may be time for me to look for the interesting/ different things people feel they specifically bring to a company with their expertise - I should add a section / question for this in the initial application.
