One of the hardest parts of college was figuring out what career I wanted to pursue postgrad. In fact, it wasn’t until two years after I graduated that I was able to make that decision. No matter where you are in your career, whether you’re itching to enter corporate America or feeling like it’s time for a career change, this may be the perfect post for you to read.
Since finding my place in tech sales, after formerly holding three different jobs, I have personally witnessed the way tech sales can be an ideal fit for all different types of candidates. Before my current role, I found myself being bound tightly to the everyday, mundane tasks a 9-5 has to offer and it began to weigh on me. This led to me seeking a job I felt more comfortable with. However, in hindsight, I can now see that comfort is not always the answer. In fact, the comfort I sought led me to spend more time in the position than was beneficial to my growth.
Until one day, I was driving home from work and ended up being cut off by a car in front of me. A stare down ensued, until I realized that I recognized the driver. Turned out they recognized me too and the next second, I got a call from old friend from college, Jack St. Pierre parked right in front of me. He suggested we grab a drink to catch up after our long day of work, which led to me explaining the dissatisfaction I was feeling in my current job. This was when he began to tell me about tech sales, and flash forward to the following month I had a job offer on the table and a new, exciting outlook on my career path!
I have grown to look at sales like a sport. For starters, it is very competitive and once you get a taste of it, it’s addictive. This creates a work environment where everyone is always trying to get better while also trying to be better than the next sales development representative (SDR). This was the first time I got to experience this sports-like competition in a work setting and it was truly a breath of fresh air. Not only has this atmosphere created excitement around work, but it has also harnessed the perfect atmosphere for team building and bonding with colleagues. Sales is also full of innovation. I was craving an exciting and challenging field, and tech sales is just that. You get to learn about a whole bunch of tech products that you may have never heard about, or you may even be learning about a new industry entirely. As someone who struggles with Microsoft Word, I assure you this is not something that should deter you from tech sales but should actually further pull you in! It has kept me on my toes and challenged me to keep my head sharp. After all, being a part of the tech sales force means being a key player in driving technological progress.
I also want to address the elephant in the room – money. We all know that at the end of the day we are looking for a high paying position. However, that rarely comes with a beginning role in most careers. But wait! That’s not necessarily the case with tech sales, which is why it attracts so many competitive, driven, and innovative individuals. The commission-based structure often means that the larger deals you close, the higher your earnings will be. This was a huge reason I wanted to explore my opportunities in the tech sales industry. I was so enamored with the idea of betting on my own abilities. While success in sales requires much practice and repetition, with the right skills, determination, and strategic approach, it can be one of the most financially rewarding career paths.
