Why is Productivity personal?

Why is Productivity personal?

Productivity is not a new concept. Beginning with the first agrarian economies to eventually industrialised societies, productivity has always been important, asking, how much can we achieve and how far can we go?

Yet thinking about productivity has changed in a very radical way in the last 50 years alone, bringing time to the forefront and as the most important non-renewable resource.

The productivity formula

It is these socio-economic factors that tend to shape our broad views on what productivity means. Our cultural backgrounds, momentary priorities and values can all impact what we consider truly productive. What is worth working on? And what does success for using our time efficiently look like?

Now time is something we know that everyone perceives uniquely, already pointing to an unrecognised personal relationship that each and every one of us have with this concept of productivity. How we perceive time fundamentally impacts how we use it and therefore how we can achieve productivity goals.

But our individuality as humans extends beyond just this perception of time, we are all shaped by unique habits, preferences, and priorities.

While to one person productivity is just getting stuff done, to others it might be about doing something truly satisfying. When we start to think about it, while these wider socio-economic factors play a huge impact in what we consider to be commercially successful productivity, our individuality plays a key role in our actions that aim to make this happen.

So, we can start to think about how other factors like our behavioural makeup, for example, will impact on how we think about this widely used concept.

This is why, productivity is not merely about adhering to rigid systems or external expectations; rather, it's a dance between understanding oneself and fine-tuning strategies that resonate with personal rhythms.
