Why Product and Business Are Separate but Interdependent

Why Product and Business Are Separate but Interdependent

The Myth of Product vs. Business

In product management, it's often said that “product and business” should be treated as separate entities. As a product manager, I agree with this view to an extent, but here’s the key: the two must interlock seamlessly. Being a true advocate for the customer while driving product growth is what sets the foundation for business success. When we deliver an exceptional product and achieve product-led growth, the business impact will follow naturally.

Instead of focusing solely on “the business,” let’s be obsessed with the pillars of product success: Customer, Strategy, and Product (CSP). These three factors, in harmony, form a chain of impact. Think of it as a linked ecosystem—if any of these links are weak, the entire chain risks breaking. That’s why a true product leader focuses on meeting customer requirements, ensuring strategic positioning for reach, and maintaining excellence in product quality and design. If CSP is prioritized, the results will speak for themselves.

Breaking Down CSP: The Core of Product Success

  1. Customer: Your product starts with the customer. Understanding their needs, frustrations, and aspirations is foundational. Everything we do revolves around them. This focus on the customer isn't about adding features; it’s about genuinely solving their problems and providing continuous value.
  2. Strategy: The best products need an intentional strategy to maximize reach and impact. It’s not just about creating something valuable but ensuring it reaches those who will benefit most. Effective strategy builds the bridge between customer needs and business objectives.
  3. Product: Finally, the product itself should be the reflection of these insights. A high-quality, well-designed product should emerge from customer feedback and strategic positioning. This is where our vision comes to life.

Staying Motivated in Product Management

For anyone stepping into the world of product management, remember that building something meaningful takes time, learning, and a constant drive to improve. Focus on mastering CSP and delivering meaningful value. By focusing on the journey—your curiosity about customer needs, honing your strategic thinking, and constantly elevating your product sense—you’re not only setting yourself up for success but creating an impact that will inevitably drive business growth.

Product management is more than a career; it’s a mindset. Be customer-centric, strategically-minded, and quality-focused, and the business results will come naturally. Embrace CSP as your framework, and let the results follow.
