Why procurement leaders should think like elite athletes!

Why procurement leaders should think like elite athletes!

Winning isn’t accidental—it’s intentional. Whether it’s on the track or in the boardroom, excellence comes from preparation, focus, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

At Zero9 , we believe lessons learned from elite athletes can transform procurement leaders into strategic game changers. That’s why at a recent Zero9 Round Table event we invited author of The Optimal Performance Formula and CEO of GOLD RESULTS Adolfo Gómez Sánchez to share his experience on how strategies from the sporting world can elevate procurement performance.

So if you’re ready to enhance your team’s potential to create value through innovation, this whitepaper is for you.?

Let’s begin by exploring Adolfo’s three transformative principles to level up your game.

?

1. Identity and performance: Know your core, push your limits

Elite athletes don’t just perform; they define themselves by their performance. Their success comes from aligning who they are with what they do, connecting deeply with their identity and relentlessly improving every aspect of their game.

For procurement leaders, this means going beyond “good enough”. It’s about drilling the fundamentals, learning continuously, and striving for growth at every level. Excellence isn’t static nor guaranteed – it’s a constant evolution and needs to be earned.

Are your actions as a procurement leader aligned with your vision for success?

Are you pushing your team to move from average to exceptional?

2. Growth and resilience: Building teams that deliver

Talent is just the start. In sports, the real differentiators are grit, adaptability, and an environment that champions growth. The best coaches don’t just spot talent, they foster it. They create a culture where feedback is constant, growth is non-negotiable, and failure is an accepted step toward greatness.

For procurement leaders, the lesson is clear: build an environment where your team is equipped to thrive. Focus on developing skills, providing consistent feedback, and nurturing resilience.

Is your procurement function structured to unlock potential?

Have you built a culture of constructive feedback and relentless improvement?

3. Train movements, not muscles: Integration is key

Top athletes don’t train individual muscles in isolation, they train for movement, working their bodies as a system. This integrated approach is essential for peak performance.

In procurement, the same principle applies. It’s not enough to optimise individual functions. The real value comes from integrating operations, technology, and commercial teams into one cohesive system. This approach creates efficiencies, breaks down silos, and enables procurement to operate as a true strategic partner.

Are your procurement operations designed for synergy?

Are you aligning systems, processes, and teams to deliver streamlined, impactful results?

Bringing it all together

The most successful procurement teams take inspiration from sporting methodologies. This means they

  • Go beyond basic spend control, focusing on advanced strategies like category management and supplier relationships.
  • Align their goals with the broader objectives of the organisation, driving proactive value and innovation.
  • Embrace a mindset of continuous refinement and improvement, pushing themselves and their teams to deliver at the highest level.

This isn’t just about achieving results. It’s about setting new standards.

Join the conversation

The lessons from sport are clear: success comes from grit, operating as one, and a commitment to constant evolution. We’d love to hear how these principles resonate with you and your team.

Great topic.Angharad. Loads of comparable principles - both at individual/leadership level and being part of a successful team. Eg Personal / team Resilience & learning from failure. Pushing the norm / beating PBs. Team R&Rs and effective comms. (Adolfo ‘s book was also good read! )

Adopting lessons from elite athletes can rejuvenate procurement. What teamwork strategies have you found crucial for success? ??
