Why Principles Guide Us and Values Ground Us

Looking back on 2024 and the year ahead, I’ve been considering what really drives meaningful decisions, and it always comes back to the balance between principles and values. They work in harmony but serve distinct purposes.?

Principles are the unshakable truths that guide outcomes. Values reflect our individual beliefs, steering our choices within the framework of those truths.

Here’s how I like to keep the two ideas straight: A principle like honesty guides someone to tell the truth, while a value like empathy shapes how they deliver that truth—kindly and thoughtfully.

At DBS, we’re grounded in principles that hold us accountable, and values that inspire us to bring our best selves to the table. Respect isn’t just lip service; it’s listening with intention.

Integrity isn’t optional; it’s doing what we say we’ll do, no matter the challenge.?

These aren’t just ideals—they’re the “why” behind what we do and how we make it happen.

When principles and values align, they create clarity, trust, and a foundation for bold, meaningful action. Whether it’s tackling a tough decision or lifting up a team member, it all comes back to this: principles drive the consequences of our actions, and values keep us grounded in purpose.

For DBS, this is more than a philosophy—it’s how we lead, collaborate, and succeed.?

What principles and values guide you?
