Why Preparation is More Important than Performance?

I had a strong sense of deja vu as I turned the calendar to 2022 on the new year night. The flashbacks of last year rushed and I remembered how I had felt hopeful and excited to enter a blissful 2021. The feelings this year were almost the same.

However, after a moment as I was done watching fireworks and colorful light shows, I wondered although the feelings remain same, but something else is different. What I see ahead is not the same anymore. And I came to realize the reason why.

Because I am a different person now.?

If you are wondering how the title of this article, Why Preparation is More Important than Performance, is related to the above intro, please read on and find out the interesting link between the two.?

Each year on the last day, I follow a ritual of reminiscing the major events of my life to do a sanity health check. This exercise is not to gauge how I have performed throughout the year but how well I am prepared for the next year! The highs and lows and all the occasions that crafted my journey not less than a palpitated electrocardiogram, have contributed in shaping me into a different person than who I was last year and before.?

So, here is why Preparation of today is more important to ponder than talking about Performance for tomorrow. In other words, what does year 2022 brings in for you is less to be worried about rather what have you collected from year 2021 is vital to remember.?

1.?????Reflect on your last move

The milestones you have achieved during the year are a sign that you can do more. Therefore, all the awards should not only be shelved for display but placed right next to your goals for year 2022. As you will look at those achievements with pride, they will also remind you of doing better so you can reach the next target.?

Similarly, your setbacks are the biggest push factors that elevated your endurance and opportunity to see things differently. Learnings, not failures, is what I prefer to call it, are experiences that allow you to have more courage, knowledge and analytical skills for the years to come.?

Use your gains and losses to prepare yourself, performance is inevitable.?

2.?????Redesign your calendar

Perhaps, your goal may be to buy your dream car by the end of this year or to attain a C-suite title in your next job. It can be as na?ve as losing weight in 6 months by 100 lbs, etc. Those are all SMART goals but then why most of the times, they remain unachieved or you lose track midway? The reason is your focus is only on the output and the attention on the process slips into the blind spot.??

Whatever your target goals are, the objective should be to evolve into the character required to accomplish that thing. Buying a car needs you to become financially responsible, losing weight needs you to become disciplined and health conscious, promotion on the job demands you to become a continuous learner, so on and so forth.?

Year 2022 calendar should have the characters or qualities you want to build in yourself leading to your goals.

Work on your being, goals will follow.?

3.?????Regularly fuel yourself?

Part of preparation is to keep yourself abreast with updated information that serves as an input to run the process towards the output. Simply put, year 2022 is a baggage of learnings from 2021 but it also needs to be refreshed continually with latest information and tactics from the environment.?

You cannot pour from an empty cup, likewise, you cannot move forward unless you fill your energy with the right fuel. Tracking your skills barometer is essential along with cleansing your lens during the journey. If this makes sense, then you know year 2022 requires more vigilance and mindfulness than ever before.?

Power is to strength, as preparation is to performance.

Here were some key techniques on how you can prepare better for a greater performance. I would like to learn from you on your preparation tips as we all need it for the years to come!?

Thanks for reading and I am more than happy to respond to your DM in case of any queries.

A fabulous newsletter, Ruheena Kabir Assoc. CIPD L7??? Here is my input? 1. I'm creative — my mind is always in content mode (content is everywhere if we have our eyes wide open.) 2. I'm mindful about taking breaks — this takes effort. 3. As I work, I'm conscious as to streamlining for efficiency. 4. I reassess where I am now, and my projects waiting to be launched on a daily basis. Love your newsletters??

Would like to disagree here. Here I am taking performance to mean execution. I have seen most failures occur due to poor execution.
