Why this picture means SO much

Archon's version of March Madness is here, and as I sit down to write this, memories of a life-changing event flood back to me. It all began on September 11th, 2001, a day that will forever be etched in my mind. On that day, my wife Katie and I boarded a Virgin Flight from Manchester Airport to Florida. It was supposed to be a vacation filled with birthday celebrations, theme parks, and swimming with dolphins. But the world had other plans.

Six hours into the flight, the captain's voice crackled over the intercom, announcing a disturbance in New York City. At first, it seemed like nothing to worry about, but the captain's tone changed as he broke the news of a major incident. We were being diverted away from our destination, and as I looked at the map on the back of the seat, I realized that our plane was headed straight for Canada.

We landed in Gander, a small island off the coast of Newfoundland, and sat on the runway for over nine hours with no news or information. Eventually, over 36 other planes landed next to us, and all the passengers were ferried to local community centers, churches, or schools. My wife and I were among the lucky ones who were given a bunk bed in a community venue and provided with food and shelter for the night.

The next morning, we gathered in the main hall where a screen had been set up. Without phones or personal belongings, we watched in silence as the images of the Twin Towers falling filled the screen, followed by news reports of the devastating events that had unfolded. We were given satellite phones to call loved ones and let them know that we were safe, but miles away from our original destination. Hearing the relief in my parents' voices when I told them I was safe was a moment I will never forget.

As more information about the tragedy came to light, it revealed the horror of the situation, bringing a sense of relief and deep sadness to everyone in that room. Over the next few days, we canoed on the lakes and talked with other passengers, pilots, and aircrew. We were welcomed and protected by the amazing people of Gander, who showed us the very best of human nature in the midst of the worst of times.

On the third day, we were called to the same big room, but this time it was only our flight. We had been the first to land and were now the first to take off. We were going back home, a sentence that filled me with every emotion possible. I asked the pilot if he could take off on such a short runway with no taxi, and he reassured me with a smile that he could. Looking into his eyes, I knew that he would get us back home safe and sound, and he did just that.

The days spent in Gander will always represent the best of people in the worst of times. It was a time when nothing else mattered except the people around us. Next year, Katie and I are going to London to watch "Come from Away," a play based on the events that unfolded in Gander. I know that it will be an emotional experience, and I'll try my best to take those feelings with me into every aspect of my life, both personally and professionally.

I'll remember those three days in Gander and the resilience and kindness of the human spirit.

As for March Madness, I'm excited to see what's in store, both for myself and Archon. We have so much planned which I can't wait to share.
