Why are people not posting on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn has over 500 million members and 40% of members are logging in daily. That means that there are lots of opportunities for you to connect with professionals that you can network with and create opportunities.

You do NOT need to connect with random people. You need to stay top of mind with the people who ALREADY know you!

The average CEO has over 930 connections on LinkedIn and many of them they know, like and trust.

Just because you are connected with someone on LinkedIn doesn’t mean that the people you are connected to will remember you.

It is not enough to add connections, you have to stay top of mind with the people that already trust you for you to benefit from referrals.

One of the best ways to stay top of mind in a non-intrusive way is to post on LinkedIn.

Yet there are only 1 million posts going up on LinkedIn each day and many of them are from me!

Why are people not posting on LinkedIn?

When I asked people at one of my 12 LinkedIn Local meetups that I hosted in NYC this year, I got a variety of reasons (I call them excuses).

BTW, you either have REASONs or you have RESULTs….


Here are the top 10 reasons why people do not post on LinkedIn.

  1. I do not know what to post. #writersblock
  2. People will judge me for being too in their face.
  3. My content is not valuable enough to share.
  4. Waiting for the perfect piece of content for me to share.
  5. My connections are not interested in seeing my posts.
  6. Everything I share people already know.
  7. I am just afraid of posting, I do not want to get judged. #haters
  8. Posting is super hard and only talented influencers should post.
  9. I am not the type of person to post content, I like watching.
  10. Not sure how to do it the most effective way.

There are probably many more reasons you can come up with like "my company doesn’t let me post," or "my hands are tied," etc.

I have found the perfect solution to this major problem that people face.

It’s called having a plan. Also known as a strategy.

You might say, that sounds super complicated. Who has time for a LinkedIn Marketing Plan?

Fail to plan and you might as well plan to fail. The people I know would plan if they got the step by step process on how to create a plan.

Some people do not want to invest in a networking or content plan because, as one person said it to me, "It’s like putting out bait and waiting for the fish to come. I don't want to invest money in doing that. It might work in some industries but it won't work in mine."

Marketing works, if done correctly.

Why? Because marketing is about testing.

The purpose of marketing is not for it to WORK but for you to see WHAT WORKS and what DOES NOT WORK. Then you can double down on the things that do work.

When you hire employees, many of them will not be the star employees you were hoping they would be. Does that mean you should never hire anyone? NO!

Hire slow and FIRE FAST! Because as soon as you realize that something is not working, you can move on and find someone that has a chance to make it.

The same goes for your marketing. Get your head around the fact that it does not need to be perfect. Your strategy is a living, breathing document that does not have to be complicated.

It’s just a recipe for success.

Here is what the recipe includes on a very high level.

  • Setting clear goals for your marketing efforts that tie back to your business goals will give you a reason to post and will help you drive your focus.
  • Understanding your target market and your target partners that are most likely to give you referrals is something most people overlook and for that reason alone have a super hard time creating content for everyone.
  • Once you know WHO you are talking to, you can create the right messaging for the right target, driving people to the goals that you set. The third step to a powerful LinkedIn marketing strategy. Messaging that speaks to your unique value and strengths. Emotion is what creates motion aka action.
  • Having an asset library of the right mix of posts. There are 6 types of posts and most people only can think of promotional posts or informational posts. You need the right mix to succeed and build influence with your target market.
  • Articles like this one also need to be part of your game plan. Most people do not realize that YOU reading this article just invested 100x more time and attention into this article than any other medium. RE-READ THIS ONE.
  • Having the right mix of media in your asset library is also the key to success. People are afraid of video and hate how their voice sounds but all that can be worked on.
  • Finally, we have a promotion plan that includes a schedule for the right times to post and the right quality vs quantity.
  • Understanding the best way to post for maximum effectiveness by understanding the algorithm and how to compose messages that get seen.
  • What gets measured gets done, and you cannot improve what you do not measure. Understanding what KPIs to review on LinkedIn and how to know if you are moving forward or backward is very important.

Take a deep breath right now. All this sounds like a lot. But it really is simple. Here are three words that will help you keep it simple.

  1. Strategy
  2. Assets
  3. Promotion
