"The greatest fear in the world is the opinion of others, and the moment you are unafraid of the crowd, you are no longer a sheep, you become a lion." - Nassim Nicholas Taleb.
Public speaking can be a daunting task for many of us, causing feelings of anxiety and nervousness. But, it’s the age-old question. Why is it that some people seem to effortlessly captivate an audience with their confidence and charm, whilst others struggle to find their voice? We'll be taking a closer look at some of the reasons why speaking confidently can be hard, and what you can do to overcome these obstacles, along with some great quotations that may inspire you on your journey to speaking more confidently.
So, buckle up and let's get started!
"You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great." - Zig Ziglar.
Fear of Judgement
We've all heard that little voice inside our heads that whispers, "What if they don't like me?" or "What if I mess up?"
This fear of judgment is one of the biggest reasons why people struggle to speak confidently. But, here's a truth bomb for you. The audience is not there to judge you, they're there to listen to you. So, focus on your message and the impact you want to make. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that your audience is there to hear what you have to say.
"The only way to do great work is to love what you do." - Steve Jobs.
Lack of Preparation
Do you ever feel like your mind goes blank when you're in front of an audience??
This can be a result of not being fully prepared for your speaking engagement - a presentation, for example. When you're not familiar with your topic, it can be hard to speak with confidence and conviction. To avoid this, make sure to do your homework and thoroughly prepare your speech. Spend time researching your topic, making an outline of what you want to say, and practising your speech until you feel comfortable and confident with what you’re planning to say.

Perfectionism
For some of us, the fear of making a mistake can be so strong that it leads to a perfectionist mindset. But, here's the thing, it's ok to make mistakes! The goal is to share your ideas, not to be perfect. Don't be so focused on being perfect that you forget to be yourself. The audience wants to see the real you, with all your quirks and flaws. So, let go of perfectionism and have some fun with it! You’ll find that it makes speaking all that much easier.
"Don't watch the clock; do what it does. Keep going." - Sam Levenson.
Lack of Experience
For those of us who haven't had much experience speaking in public, it can be difficult to know what to expect. This lack of experience can lead to feelings of uncertainty, making it even harder to speak confidently. But, here's the good news, practice makes perfect! Seek out opportunities to practise speaking in front of a group. You could join a public speaking club, volunteer to give presentations at work or even offer to speak at community events. The more you practise, the more confident you'll become. Soon, it’ll become second nature.
"Confidence is the most important single factor in this game, and no matter how great your natural talent, there is only one way to obtain and sustain it: work." - Jack Nicklaus.
Speaking confidently can be a challenge for many of us, but it's a challenge that we can overcome. Whether it's a fear of judgment, lack of preparation, perfectionism, or lack of experience, there are always going to be obstacles that can get in the way. But, by recognizing these challenges and taking steps to overcome them, you can develop the skills that will make you much more confident. Who knows, you might even become a better public speaker because of those challenges!
