WHY IS PASSIVE HOUSE THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE HOME DESIGN?

Passive House...

Why is this the future of sustainable home design?

And what is passive house and why is it exponentially gaining in popularity across Boston, the US and the world?

Passive house is the future of sustainable design. If Tesla and Apple combined their creative legacies to make a home - the result would be a passive house.

Boston is an international hub of innovation, so it is to no surprise that Boston homeowners have begun to embrace passive house and push this technology forward.?

There are now more than 5,300 certified passive buildings internationally and the popularity of passive house is exponentially increasing each year.?

These charts show the exponential expansion of passive house across the world:

SO WHAT IS A PASSIVE HOUSE??

This is the increasingly popular gold standard of eco home originally invented in Germany in 1988 by Wolfgang Feist.?

Passive house is an extremely innovative yet fundamentally simple approach to eco home design, a Passive House is designed and constructed intentionally so as to not require heating or air-conditioning while providing the occupants with consistent fresh air—a far healthier option by far to recirculated air through an HVAC system.? A passive house is far healthier for both the occupants as well as for our earth than a traditional house.?

So how can this be??

This is a great simple explanation of a Passive House in 90 seconds:?

Passive houses offer their occupants three distinct benefits:

  • Exceptional indoor air quality?
  • Low monthly energy costs??
  • A markedly reduced carbon footprint approaching net zero emissions??

For homeowners who are passionate about sustainability and sustainable design, passive house is an amazing option.

We are coming to the end of a unique project in Boston, Mass where we converted an existing two-family home to a single family passive house. This is extremely rare as most passive houses are new build from scratch. To my knowledge this is the first residential passive house retrofit in Boston, and we are extremely proud of it.

We put together this short video to show the five principles of a passive house:

NEDC is now certified to both design and build passive houses and we have embraced this technology fully as the sustainable home design of the future.

It's a fascinating topic.

If you are a real estate advisor or homeowner interested in passive house, feel free to reach out. We'd love to discuss this technology of the future and share our experience.

Love,

I agree with you on the Tesla analogy, it's one I've explored for our own passive design projects. We share Tesla's mission based philosophy, to transition the world to renewable energy future. Our job as Architects is to design the machine for living in the most elegant way possible to deliver the most comfortable and healthy interior environment for the end users. Inspiring article!

This sounds fascinating! Could you please share more details about your sustainable home design in Boston? I'm interested in the eco-friendly and passive house aspects.

Not sure I agree with you. Upstate yes but lower levels or at sea level with increased humidity and pollution??? Climate plays a big role in where these types of homes can be successful. I built a LEED certified (GOLD & SILVER) neighborhood here in SC in the 2000's and it was a tough sale then. Easier now but still more expensive. Definitely DO see your plans as viable for much of the southeast.
