Why Passionate Individuals Are Your Most Valuable Asset

As a HR consultant and international speaker, I work with executives and employees who are seeking ways to increase their competitive advantage.

Passionate members are engaged members. This is applicable in employment or civic organizations. Evidence supports individuals who are passionate about what they do will be both happier and more productive. Engaged team members bring their best authentic selves into their roles in a healthy organizational culture. Unfortunately, ‘engagement’ in organizations remains stagnant around the globe.

The work epidemic of uninterested and disengaged workers will improve once individuals are doing work they are actually passionate about. Thus creating a high trust culture, which will help improve engagement in organizations automatically.

According to a survey from my former firm Deloitte, passion is made up of the following three characteristics:

·  A long-term commitment to a specific domain that is goal oriented and unruffled by short term turbulence.

· A questioning disposition where they are always seeking knowledge from new challenges.

· A connecting disposition, meaning a tendency to form strong, trust-based relationships passionate team members.

Passionate individuals are caring, thoughtful, driven and committed about their causes and interests. Which will naturally yield high quality results I believe based upon my expereience in organizational psyhology.

"Having worked in human capital management in various aspects for over 15 years I realize individuals are often intimated by talented passionate members on their teams. Sometimes members talk negatively about passionate individuals with hopes others will not find them so appealing. Often when you are a perceived a THREAT you become a TARGET, even by individuals in positions of power (leadership). I contend continue to be passionate and positive despite the negative energy! Evaluate your situation and decide if you and your passion could assist others in another organization or decide how to work with the current leadership. Remember they may be hating but best believe they are taking copious notes." Zakiya

In closing I encourage leaders to walk the talk. Leaders in organizations are your actions, polices, and ideas consistent with your organization’s core values/beliefs? Have you listened to your employees or members about what precisely needs to change in your organization from their perspective? Be the change you want to see you your organization and the world.
