Why Passion Is Overrated

There has been a lot of talk about being passionate and "in touch with your inner feelings" in order to pursue an endeavour that will lead to success.
We're told to do our "heart's work" and to dig deep to uncover what will truly make us happy.
But what if the secret to success requires you to be dispassionate — even distant, unbothered and nonplussed — about your "life's work"?
What if it requires you to be willing to "kill your darlings" (borrowing from Stephen King), even after you've grown your enterprise to a respectable size?
Relentless (and Reckless) Growth
Time and again, I encounter fellow business owners who are so enamoured with their enterprises that they are willing to sacrifice everything to keep them afloat. While it is admirable to have passion and dedication for your work, becoming overly obsessed with the idea of being a boss can lead to reckless decisions.
As an entrepreneur, I understand the importance of sustaining what I do. This involves regularly reviewing income and expenses, motivating my team, and ensuring a healthy pipeline of projects. Maintaining this balance is crucial for long-term success.
Pursuing growth and expansion without considering your bottom line and cash flow can be perilous, even when opportunities arise. A strategic and measured approach is essential to avoid pitfalls and ensure the sustainability of your business.
Calm in the Midst of Failure
When failure strikes, our instinctive reaction is often to feel disheartened or overwhelmed, especially if it results in a significant setback. However, adopting a calm and level-headed approach can transform setbacks into opportunities for growth.
Take Thomas Edison, for example. He encountered thousands of failed experiments before successfully inventing the electric light bulb. Rather than succumbing to frustration, Edison viewed each failure as a valuable lesson. He calmly analysed what went wrong and adjusted his approach accordingly. This calm perseverance allowed him to succeed where many others would have given up.
A composed mindset enables you to assess failures objectively, learn from mistakes, and devise strategies to overcome obstacles. This approach not only facilitates finding solutions but also builds resilience, empowering you to tackle future challenges with confidence.
Cut Losses When Needed (aka Kill Your Darlings)
In the creative process, the phrase "kill your darlings" suggests that sometimes you must let go of cherished ideas or projects for the greater good. I have certainly done my fair share — including quitting from a well-paying stable senior management role.
This principle is equally important in business and personal growth.
Steve Jobs was known for his ability to cut projects that didn't meet Apple's high standards, even if they were initially promising. By eliminating distractions and focusing on what truly mattered, Jobs could channel resources into projects that led to Apple's greatest successes.
Cutting losses requires you to detach yourself emotionally from your creations and investments. It involves recognising when a project is no longer viable and having the courage to pivot or abandon it in favour of more promising opportunities.

Analysing Data Without Getting Emotional
Data-driven decision-making is a hallmark of successful enterprises. By focusing on hard facts rather than gut feelings, you can make informed choices that drive progress.
Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is known for his reliance on data to guide the company's direction. This analytical approach has allowed Amazon to innovate continuously and adapt to changing market conditions.
Removing emotion from the equation when analyzing data ensures that you remain objective and focused on what the numbers tell you. It allows for clear, rational decisions that align with your long-term goals, helping to avoid impulsive actions based on temporary emotions.
Maintaining Work-Life Balance
Striking a balance between passion and practicality is an important factor to sustain success. While passion can drive motivation, an overreliance on it can lead to burnout and tunnel vision.
Lyn Lee, co-founder of Awfully Chocolate, demonstrates the importance of balance in her entrepreneurial journey. After leaving a stable legal career to pursue her passion for chocolate, Lee quickly learned the value of balancing work and personal life. She ensures time for family and personal interests, which allows her to stay creative and energized in managing her business.
Achieving balance means setting boundaries and prioritizing your well-being alongside your ambitions. It involves knowing when to push forward and when to step back and recharge. This balanced approach prevents burnout and ensures you have the energy and perspective to pursue your goals effectively.
Stay Measured with Mindfulness
Mindfulness, the practice of being present and fully engaged in the moment, can significantly enhance your ability to succeed. Mindfulness allows you to approach challenges with clarity and composure, enabling you to make better decisions.
Thich Nhat Hanh, a renowned Zen master and mindfulness teacher, emphasized the importance of being present and aware of your thoughts and emotions. He believed that mindfulness could transform the way we approach life and work, allowing us to act with intention and purpose.
As he once said, "The present moment is the only time over which we have dominion." This philosophy encourages us to focus on the here and now, reducing stress and improving our ability to respond effectively to challenges.
By cultivating mindfulness, you can navigate the complexities of business and life with greater ease and effectiveness. It fosters an awareness of your thoughts and emotions, helping you to remain calm and focused, even amidst chaos. This state of mind empowers you to act with intention and purpose, leading to more thoughtful and impactful actions.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while passion is often celebrated as a key to success, it is crucial to remain cool, distant, and unattached in the pursuit of our goals. This approach allows us to make clear-headed decisions, adapt to changes, and navigate setbacks with resilience. By staying detached from the emotional highs and lows, we can maintain perspective and avoid becoming overwhelmed by temporary setbacks or successes.
Ultimately, success comes from a mindset that balances calm detachment with thoughtful action. Embracing mindfulness and maintaining composure in the face of challenges enable us to focus on what truly matters and act with purpose. By cultivating these qualities, we can achieve our objectives more effectively and sustain success in both business and life.

3 个月Sometimes, for entrepreneurs, following your passion might mean digging a deeper hole beneath yourself, if there is no clear way to generate profits for the company as well. We helped a company recently relook at their financials and they were in for a rude. They will go bankrupt in 1yrs time, Walter Lim . They had to tweak their business model to keep the company and themselves alive.

3 个月Great little article Walter. Speaking from experience ya. It's undeniable, when you leave school and join in the big bad world, it's normal for companies to incalculate a can-do attitude, winner takes all mentality in order to hit targets/ quotas / commissions. This carries over even when one has moved to build a business as this was the ONLY lesson that guaranteed success, previously. Thus one is lost when things go awry as it tends to. Thus, taking a step back from the precipice and clearing one's mind like a white board, mentally writing in the good/bad/worse scenarios and ideas to counter may be the only way forward or even to painfully acknowledge defeat and maybe one may seek help or advise from more experienced others to find an answer..
