Why Owner-Operators Often Struggle to Grow

The bigger ship is harder to steer. We’ve all heard that chestnut in many talks and meetings. But it’s one of those cliches that’s also true.

Owner-operators tend to drive their success by implementing their vision early on, but as you grow, the more your business depends on something else…

  • Now you have more staff.?
  • More investments.?
  • More assets.

And you can’t be everywhere to implement your vision.?

It often ends up feeling like your team doesn’t have the drive or initiative you do. It feels like more staff are becoming loose, disconnected parts – drifting when you need them to be pushing.

You need to chart a course for the future of your company that everyone can see. A course in which they know where they fit and how they’re expected to contribute to the most important goals. In fact - where they know and understand what those goals are.

This is the way we think about the word strategy. And owner-operators need it if they want to break into the next tier of scalable growth.?

The strategy you need:

  • Make sure you’ve taken the time to establish a few cornerstone goals for the business. You know, revenue, margin, reach, key customer wins… things like that.
  • Align your people and resources around these shared goals.
  • Identify what is your competitive edge and strategize more to give it more leverage in your marketing and sales.
  • Be honest about wasted efforts and streamline your processes to minimize it.
  • Most importantly, synchronize all action points around winning more revenue!

A strategy isn’t about a half-day brainstorming session. It’s an ongoing process that keeps your ship on course for growth.

That said, it takes time to get organized and get focused on your strategy. If you’ve struggled to get around to it, I have a simple way for you to gain traction.? We call it getting un-stuck.? Un-stuck growth means growing on purpose in the way you want your business to grow.

So, here’s the first step: Let’s grab 15 minutes together, and I’ll show you how we diagnose the root causes of your “stuck-ness” and prescribe specific actions you can take to get growth back on track.?

15 minutes. A clear next step. That’s called momentum.
