Why Our Side-View Systems Are the Best on the Market

Below, we’ll discuss why the Peco-InspX side-view X-ray machine is by far the best in the market.


Our single-beam solo machine is designed primarily to inspect cans. Here are some of the features you need to know:

  1. It sits over your existing customer conveyer. That makes it 100% non-contact, which means it doesn’t interfere with the operation of your line whatsoever.
  2. Because of its design, the system is completely indiscriminate in the container spacing. If your containers are spaced back-to-back, that’s fine; if they’re spaced apart, that works, too. The machine is exceptionally tolerant to whatever operational scenario you encounter.

 

  • I’m looking for great image quality.

The difference between our X-ray system and everything else on the market is, by far, the image quality. Let’s consider the components that make that happen.

  1. We use a metal-ceramic X-ray tube, 600 watts, with the highest imaging contrast on the market.
  2. Our machines have high-resolution detectors with a Kevlar strip and low imaging noise. That results in better detection of small pieces of foreign material and an extremely low false reject rate. (It almost sounds too good to be true to us, too.)

 

  • I have a lot of cans to inspect every day.

Our side-view X-ray machine is the fastest on the market thus far. Every day, these things are inspecting cans, food, and beverage at speeds up to 2,200 cans per minute!

  • What exactly can your can inspection systems inspect?

They can inspect the can container itself, as well as what goes inside. For example, they can find small dent degradations in the can and a small foreign material stuck in the bottom within the same inspection.

When you’re inspecting cans, a single-beam system will work well for about 95% of the applications. But for customers that want to find asymmetric objects, like bones and glass, we recommend a multi-beam system.

One of the things we’ve found our customers particularly appreciate is that our machines can find gross defects with the can: like seam problems or severe dents. But what they don’t want is the ability of the system to reject smaller dents.

We’re introducing dent discrimination technology that will allow customers to say, “Those dents are fine, pass them through”. Imagine you have a small dent you could just put a label over – you don’t want to reject a perfectly usable can. This technology will give our customers much greater operational control over what they consider “good” or usable.

  • What kind of defects can you find?

In a can, we can find down to 0.8 mm in the body and 1 mm in the base. Glass is somewhere between 2.5 and 3 mm in the body and 3 to 3.5 in the base. When we say “in the base”, we mean inspection can find dents even in the ridges of the can (a worst-case scenario).

  • What if I need remote support?

A lot of people in our industry talk about “remote support”. It’s one of the most incorrectly-used terms in our field. But our systems are designed to be real-time telemetry collection machines. Everything in the machine is instrumented; it’s constantly telling us how it’s performing. The machine will give you statistics on just about every step of the inspection process. What does that mean? We can constantly assess how the machine is working; and if it breaks, we know exactly what’s wrong. We can fix about 95% of our field problems through a remote connection.

 

  • What about replacement parts?

We have easy-to-replace inspection components. We make sure our individual parts are not heavy and easy-to-insert; we want there to be a low barrier to entry so that any employee can replace parts if necessary – unlike the large mono-blocks used in our competitors’ machines.

Our tubes have beryllium windows (we talk about that more here). For low-density applications, it makes a huge difference in detection. By the way: we’re the only company to have this kind of tube for side-view machines.

  • My machines will need to withstand a tough environment.

The machines come in configurations that use harsh environment survivability. Full standard IP 66 rating, available IP 69 K, and IP 69 K “max”, which is a nearly indestructible machine for even the harshest sanitation conditions.
