In my normal course of day-to-day life, I have many discussions with college level students and many times the conversation leads to the ChatGPT topic. I was a micro-electronic engineer immediately prior to my 30+ career in commercial real estate, which sort of makes me the oldest person in the room which possesses a firm grasp of technology. ChatGPT is an extremely convenient www search engine, data aggregator and data presenter. Its usefulness should be taught to our students. In that education they should include do's and don'ts for letting it write a term paper for you without the student utilizing critical thinking or understanding its content. I write quite a few article and opinion pieces and how I approach it I write my paper, then ask ChatGPT about the same topic to see if I missed something or if something was explained better. This way my critical thinking is intact, but my understanding of the topic and my paper does get improved.
I did two tests with ChatGPT.
In one I matched it up against Alexa. ChatGPT's output format is in written text so easier to cut-and-paste. However, if you open MS word and go into Narrate mode then everything that Alexa outputs get converted to text too. ChatGPT is more verbose but similar results get shared, while Alexa cites sources for many of its retrieved data.
The second test was one of deriving conclusions based upon the data available in the www. ChatGPT and Alexa are great in scouring the www for information, but they aren't Artificially Intelligent yet. I wrote an opinion piece for Innovate Long Island titled Being steadfast in not returning to work in the office may soon come without pay or a job. When I did this back in May of 2023 there was plenty of data about the work force not wanting to return to work. But I asked what the question concerning the repercussions of this over the long term and neither ChatGPT nor Alexa answered that query because they answer wasn't on the www yet.

Conclusion
Just like the library, internet, Cliff's Notes, etc., we should be teaching our youth how to embrace these new evolving technologies and explain why you don't want the app writing your paper. If an app can do your job, you won't have a job. However, the people who can freely embrace and utilize new tech will always have a job.
