Why Organization and Simplification Are Not the Same
Recently, I’ve been thinking about workplace rules the same way I think about closet space: when something new is added, something else must be donated. Canceling outdated or old rules is not only a decluttering exercise, it gives us a framework to examine why or how we do certain things. For leaders, this exercise can reveal where change is most needed — and afterward, employees often report feeling empowered to simplify their daily work. Apply this technique annually, every quarter, or whenever a new initiative or system introduces new rules to your organization. When we declutter outdated rules, we’re making space for new and better-fitting approaches.
