PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Nearly 200,000 veterans leave active duty each year, but only one in four has a job lined up for civilian life, according to the Pew Research Center. Journey to Serve is an organization that works to place veterans in jobs within the funeral service industry — and while that may seem like a peculiar transition, it makes total sense, according to Douglas Nie, a U.S. Air Force veteran and funeral home director in Ann Arbor, Michigan.?
“I went from serving globally to serving locally,” says Nie. “There are many parallels between serving the military and serving families who lost loved ones. A lot of things that we are taught in the military — like tradition, honor and respect — are the main ideals in funeral service.”?
GREAT MINDS: In our new Advisers in Conversation series, Lester Morales of Next Impact and Brandon Weber of Nava sit down to discuss how to bring transparency, innovation and better utilization to healthcare.
“This system isn’t broken — it was completely designed wrong from the beginning,” Morales says. “We shop for everything in our lives, but we forget that healthcare is a consumable and shoppable good or service. The adviser is going to need to lead this change.”
