Why No One Taught Us Self-Management and Why It Matters

At university, we learned so much about management. Through my working career, I have both taken and given countless courses on managing teams, projects—you name it. All of this is great, but I wish someone had taught us how to manage ourselves, our talents, our needs, our minds, and our thoughts. I guess that is what life is for. It takes a lot of work to be a great manager, but it takes way more work to become a better manager of yourself. But why does self-management matter more than anything else?

1. Testing and Expanding Your Limits

Only by learning how to manage yourself will you be able to test and expand your limits. Self-management allows you to push boundaries and achieve many successes, but it also teaches you when it's time to stop and take a break. Knowing your limits and respecting them is crucial for long-term success and well-being.

2. Better Emotional Management

By learning to manage yourself, you will also learn to manage your emotions better. Emotions can significantly impact your decision-making and interactions with others. Effective self-management helps you stay composed under pressure, respond rather than react, and maintain a positive outlook even in challenging situations.

3. Managing Expectations

Self-management involves setting realistic expectations for yourself and others. By understanding your capabilities and limitations, you can set achievable goals and avoid unnecessary stress and disappointment. It also means being clear about what you expect from others, which fosters better relationships and collaborations.

4. Choosing the Right People to Surround Yourself With

The people you surround yourself with have a significant impact on your growth and success. Self-management includes being selective about your company and choosing individuals who inspire, support, and challenge you in positive ways. Building a strong, supportive network is essential for personal and professional development.

5. Discovering Yourself

Most importantly, self-management is the only way to truly discover yourself. It involves introspection, understanding your strengths and weaknesses, and aligning your actions with your values and passions. This self-awareness is the foundation for personal fulfillment and meaningful achievements.

In conclusion, self-management is a critical skill that surpasses traditional management techniques. It enables you to test and expand your limits, manage your emotions, set realistic expectations, choose the right people to surround yourself with, and ultimately, discover your true self. While it requires continuous effort and dedication, the rewards of mastering self-management are invaluable and far-reaching, impacting every aspect of your life. So, take the time to invest in yourself, and watch as everything else falls into place.

Thank you for the great article my friend. I totally agree with you. Unfortunately, most of the important life skills are never learned at school. Whenever I tackle this subject, I get the same question: "ok, but how do I learn this stuf? How do I learn and progress in self development / management?" I woild love to hear your answer to this question Kosta Petrov ??
