Why One Social Media Manager Can't Do the Job of Three

Why One Social Media Manager Can't Do the Job of Three

In today’s digital age, social media has evolved from a simple communication tool into a complex and dynamic ecosystem. Businesses that harness the full potential of social media often find themselves ahead of the curve, enjoying heightened brand awareness, improved customer engagement, and increased sales. However, the intricate nature of social media management means that expecting a single person to handle all its facets is not only unrealistic but also counterproductive.

Here’s why you should rethink the “one social media manager fits all” approach:

1. Diverse Skill Sets are Essential

Modern social media management demands a variety of specialised skills, typically divided among three key roles:

  • Content Creator: This role focuses on making engaging videos, designing eye-catching graphics, and producing all social content. They spend most of their time either brainstorming ideas, shooting, editing, or refining content. This role spends little time at a desk.
  • Copywriter: Responsible for writing captivating captions and persuasive copy for social ads, this role also manages community interactions and escalates issues to customer care teams. Additionally, they write newsletter and email content, ensuring seamless integration with social strategies. This role spends a lot of time at a desk.
  • Coordinator: This role organizes content calendars, ensures posts are live across client channels daily, and manually uploads content when necessary. They also handle reporting, manage creator briefings, and coordinate tasks. This role spends a lot of time at a desk.

Expecting one person to handle all aspects of content creation, copywriting, and coordination is akin to expecting a chef to simultaneously manage the grill, bake pastries, and coordinate the kitchen. Just as different timelines are needed for each culinary task, crafting content, writing copy, and coordinating schedules require distinct timeframes and expertise.

2. Effective social media management requires balancing multiple tasks with specific timeframes

  • Content Creation: This role often involves being on the move, whether shooting videos or creating graphics. Timing is crucial, as content must be ready for posting at scheduled times each day.
  • Copywriting and Community Management: Crafting captions, engaging with followers, and handling customer inquiries demand dedicated desk time and quick responses, especially since social media interactions occur in real-time.
  • Coordination and Analysis: Planning posts, analyzing metrics, and adjusting strategies require daily focus and attention to detail. These tasks must align with the content creation and community management efforts to ensure cohesive and effective social media presence.

Each task is essential for maintaining an active online presence. When one aspect lacks attention or falls behind schedule, it can affect the overall quality of social media management, impacting brand perception and audience engagement.

3. Burnout and Job Satisfaction

The pressure of handling all aspects of social media can lead to burnout. A social media manager who is overworked and overwhelmed is unlikely to be creative, responsive, or strategic. Burnout not only affects their performance but also their overall job satisfaction and well-being, leading to higher turnover rates and a loss of valuable experience and knowledge for the company.

4. Scalability and Growth

As a business grows, so do its social media needs. A team approach allows for scalability. Different team members can specialize and bring their unique strengths to the table, leading to a more robust and dynamic social media presence. This division of labor fosters innovation and ensures that all aspects of social media are handled with the expertise they deserve.

Conclusion

Investing in a robust social media team isn't merely an expense; it's a strategic investment yielding long-term benefits. Recognizing the multifaceted demands of social media management and appropriately allocating resources enable businesses to effectively manage their online presence while fostering audience engagement and growth.

It's not just about skill sets; it's about recognizing that certain tasks require simultaneous attention, often at fixed times daily. For instance, if a team member is at a shoot, how can they effectively manage community interactions?
