Why “One Size Fits All” Self-Improvement Doesn’t Work
We must seek guidance from people with similar personality types and who have already actually accomplished the same things we want to achieve.

Why “One Size Fits All” Self-Improvement Doesn’t Work

In the realms of business, personal life, relationships, finances, and health, many people struggle not because they lack effort or dedication but because they are overwhelmed with too much good advice. It seems like everywhere we look on social media, a new guru is proclaiming the magic formula to get that job promotion, land the next client, build the perfect marriage, make more friends, or achieve the dream of six-pack abs.

These claims are getting bolder and more extreme, promising results in 30 days or less with minimal effort. The issue isn’t that the advice being given is inherently bad. In fact, much of it is quite good—for someone. But therein lies the problem: most advice is generic, offering a one-size-fits-all solution without accounting for individual differences. Even when the advice is tailored to a niche, it often neglects the complexity of personality types and unique personal experiences.

Here’s what I’ve learned: if you’re a perfectionist driven by gut feelings, following most generic self-improvement advice could do more harm than good.

You don’t need to take more action; you need more stillness.

You don’t need to increase your hustle; you need to slow down.

You don’t need another checklist; you need to learn to accept yourself on days when zero progress is made.

You don’t need to grow a thicker skin and “F your excuses”; you need to learn to speak kindly to yourself, even when your inner critic shouts the loudest.

These ideas may sound counterintuitive compared to what everyone else is preaching. For most people, mainstream advice might lead to positive changes, and I hope it does. But for those like me, perfectionists with a gut-driven, intuitive decision-making style who often wrestle with ADD, the standard approaches can lead to burnout, frustration, and stagnation.

We make up a small percentage of the population, yet our potential to achieve great things is immense. We’re cut from the same cloth as leaders like Michael Jordan, Tony Robbins, and King David. The world doesn’t always understand us, and trying to fit ourselves into its molds will only lead us to places we don’t want to go.

So, join me on a different path. Learn to zig when the world zags, to swerve when the world curves, and to breathe while everyone else is striving breathlessly. Let’s find strategies that work for us, not against us.
