Why one should get to know about the product before trying to sell it?
The salesman knows nothing of what he is selling save that he is charging a great deal too much for it.
Oscar Wilde
The Sales People must be educated and trained about the product before they are given a chance to sell it. This is to be done because:
Customers are well informed
The customers of today's world make well-informed choices when they choose to buy a product. With the advent of the internet and growth of online review websites, it is easy for a potential buyer to get to know them first-hand experience of a product even before they lay their eyes on it. It is also known in many cases that consumer researches about the pros and cons of buying a product or a service even before they step into the store. It wouldn't be a surprise if the buyer of your product knows your product better than you do as a salesperson.
You are representing your organization
For the potential buyer, you are the face of the company's product. All your actions will be projected onto the product you are trying to sell and eventually the company itself. This is why some companies tend to get a bad reputation just because of one lousy support personnel. If the person trying to sell a product that he has no clue about, the potential buyer will see through that and will reject the buying decision even if it is a great product.
